YOU may not be convinced of that.

But I'm fairly certain Saban and Smart are.

Until I see your rings, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

I'm not convinced one way or the other.

Based on what though? Because Sylve didn't get pulled? He knew the defense better than TB/Hump, that is why they didn't pull him mid game.

I would too. I never claimed to be qualified to make the decisions they make.

Exactly. Which is another way of saying Sylve is currently our "best" (applying this adjective to him makes me cringe) or least awful option.

I suppose. I wouldn't consider knowing the D because you've been around longer making you "better", but to each his own.

Nope. We don't know that because no one else got a chance. If brown and Humphrey went in for sylve and jones and still got shredded then you'd have a point. They literally couldn't have done any worse than sylve. It's nearly impossible.

That's why a gave "better" the quotes.

Knowing the D can be one of the factors that makes a someone the "best" option.

All that being said, it worries me that Sylve is our best option at the moment.

YOU haven't seen them get their chances.

Saban and Smart have in practice.

They could've gotten burned for TDs causing us to lose the game.

I suspect they could've done as well as Sylve (Cyrus played OK) but asking a true frosh, much less two, to come in and play our complex system against a hurry up pass happy team probably didn't appeal to CNS. And it's of course very possible they could've done worse.

This too.

Here's a crazy thought, maybe Saban and Smart evaluate these guys, day in and day out through the spring and summer camps. Maybe they've considered all the factors a few times and didn't project that TB or MH would have made a positive difference in the secondary's performance.

Maybe what they've observed, again day in and day out through spring and summer camp, indicated that those younger guys would have been even more of a liability.

But the opposite to that is this:

If they wouldn't have done any better (couldn't have done any worse), why not give them the experience? They need it more than Sylve. They're here for the next three years. Put one in for Sylve an even if he doesn't do better than Sylve, at least he got the experience.

Like Sarc said, despite the hyperbole being spouted around here, they could have done worse.

Pretty easy to completely blow an assignment and give up an uncontested deep ball:
1. In a complex defense system
2. Against an up-tempo offense
3. As a young player with no college football experience
4. In the opening game.

Sylve couldn't have done much worse.

Jones was ok. Some bad plays. Some good plays.

Leon Brown got yanked for Taylor. Sylve played poorly but apparently coaches were either confident in his ability to play better or weren't confident in the other options

Exactly. I think we'll find out what's gonna happen in a day or two based on practice.

Hopefully TB/Hump get a lot of PT v the scrubs.

And I love Jarrick, but we need to play three corners in Nickel.

Well there you go.

Our coaches apparently judged that the other guys performances would have fallen within that margin, however small it may be.

Here's what CNS had to say a couple days ago about expectations of first year players:

quote:

"There's a word called development that nobody seems to want to ever acknowledge in sports anymore, especially you all (media)," Saban said as his voice edges a little bit louder.

"You want to make guys, like stars, before they ever play. And I like for them to play about three years really good, like I mean really good, then I think a guy's a good player because he proved he could play well over time. And that, really is what makes somebody a really good player. "But if we have one freshman intercept one pass and run for one touchdown in this game and it will be like this guy's the greatest DB that's ever played in the history of Alabama. Aight, but he might have messed up on 15 other plays. So just let them develop. Please."

LINK

I can see why he gets frustrated. Fans want to see the highly rated freshmen, I get that. But we shouldn't expect them to be ready for meaningful PT in their very first game. Yes, rating services gave them high grades, but it still takes time to develop that talent into a good college player. It's unfair of us to expect them to go out there and play before they've been properly developed.

First off, Saban and Smart didn't allow either CB to look great with the game plan they concocted. When you walk off your corners 10 yards and it's 3rd & 6 or 7, you hafta expect a veteran QB is gonna take to easy underneath throw to extend drives. Look how many bubble screens were thrown when they had 2 WRs against one DB on the line and one 8+ deep. Neither CJ or BS were gonna look spectacular under those circumstances.

I agree with that. We can't play that zone BS against those teams.
