SIAP, but I just made the connection yesterday while watching the 2014 Iron Bowl again. Griffith's opening KO, which appeared strange at the time and got little discussion by the announcers, looks exactly the chip shot onsides kick against Clemson. Never read if the call was on against Auburn. Did the receiver miss the call, or did Griffith go off the reservation?

I think he was hurt and just kicked it bad, didn't he miss the rest of the game?

No, he had one of the more satisfying redemptions possible in that game, going five-for-five on field goals, including a long of 50.

He was subbed for at least one PAT, but Griffith came back after one was blocked. Scott did KO later in the game. But if you go back and look at Griffith's mechanics on that kick, it looks just like the one against Clemson. And I can see why Saban wouldn't mention it on his own...now it will likely never be able to be used again.

My mistake...and now edited. The 2014 Blake Sims Iron Bowl.
We promptly got the ball on the fumbled lateral anyway.

Take a look at the clip from the 7:12 to 7:18 mark. Both us and Auburn are in different formations, but looking at Griffith's mechanics and body language, it was obviously a deliberate act.

I hated that 14 Iron Bowl, I have never been more pissed off at a game then I was that night.

If this is true, seek therapy.

The way the defense played that night was embarrassing. I was so pissed off at halftime and then Blake throws a int on the first play of the 3rd quarter. At that point I was the maddest I have ever been at a Bama game. After what happened in the 13 Iron Bowl, this game was the one game Bama could not afford to lose.

Nice read! I'll bet you're right.

Not only was it deliberate, but Saban also obviously didn't go off on Griffith. So the play had to be on. It wasn't very well executed, but Auburn, with a guy near the sideline, wasn't in a very favorable formation. But the announcers didn't make much of a deal about it, and maybe that's why, as far as I can recall, no media guy ever asked Saban about it. Thankfully, Saban got to put it back in his hip pocket until he really needed it.

The play was created circa early 2014 season. The plan was to have one of the track guys on the outside catch the chip onsides kick. We've practiced it for about two years now and attempted it a few times against G5/FCS teams like Charleston southern. I was surprised it actually worked for once.

One of my roommates freshman year was one of the student assistants for the football team and told us about it early in the year.
