Now that Nick Saban is retired, someone needs to ask what Dennis Franchione said in 2002.

All week, the Internet and all of talk radio were abuzz regarding a tirade supposedly launched into by then-LSU head coach Nick Saban, talking about how he was not going to let their SEC championship (LSU was defending SEC champion at the time) be taken away by a bunch of cheaters.

quote:

Nightfall descended upon Tiger Stadium and the Tide took the field for pre-game warm-ups, there was something in the south end zone that would definitely make an Alabama fan look twice. It was Dennis Franchione... leaning against the goal post, and I don't think I need to remind any Alabama fan of the significance and the symbolic nature of what that entails.

When the game began, Alabama administered a physical beatdown of the Bayou Bengals, ending in a 31-0 victory that was probably the finest game Alabama had played in years. After the clock hit 0:00 and the band began to fire up Rammer Jammer, Franchione confronted Nick Saban at midfield with a fiery outburst and apparently some harsh words. No one ever really knew exactly what Franchione said -- and his actions became downright incomprehensible given what would occur in the following weeks -- but the thinking at the time was that Franchione was giving Saban a thorough browbeating for his supposed comments after the Kentucky game.

I hate saying this, but Fran would have been pretty good over the long term if he would have stayed. One of those situations where the outcome ended up really bad for both parties.

Once he became viewed as a mercenary going to A&M, his whole brand was shot and everything went totally south.

That picture of him leaning against the goal post nauseates me.

He was really becoming beloved. If he hadn't been missing practices before the Iron Bowl in 2002, Bama wins that game easily and finishes the season 11-2. I know I was ready to ride out probation and be patient with him.

The reality is that he destroyed himself with his toxic personality. He left TCU in a rude way, left Alabama in a rude way, and then was illegally leaking players' medical details behind a paywall during his tenure at Texas A&M.

He was Franchione's QB at Blynn Junior College and they won the national championship that year.

Actually, he was probably kicked out of Florida first, I don't remember which happened first.

Wasn't that Franchione's son that was Blinn's HC?

Franchione never worked there. After he got fired from Texas A&M in 2007, his next and final stop was Texas State in 2011.

The worst loss in Saban’s career at LSU was to Alabama. Pretty hilarious if you think about it.

Busted by Greg Byrne's father, Bill who was the AD at Aggie at that time.

Looks like I am wrong and you're right, it was his son Brian Franchione who coached Cam.

Still, I never liked Fran at Bama my friends thought I was crazy but I wasn't very happy with 2002. Should have beat OU and UGA.

Plus he was notorious for blowing huge leads like against South Carolina in 2001 and OU in 2002.

That was probably the most thorough arse whipping Saban took in his career relative to talent levels.

Clemson whipped our arse in the natty but that was more of a wtf just happened than a thorough beat down. We ran for 300+ yards that night and Marcus Randall was 6-17 for like 60 yards
