shortly after winning the us amateur, pate was called into bryant's office...presumably to be congratulated for winning such a prestigious tournament. instead, bryant said something along the lines of "you aren't on scholarship to play in some damn us amateur. you're on scholarship to play for the university of alabama"
meh, Bryant really liked Pate because he was "a winner." Pate tells that story because it goes along with some of the Bryant folklore. but Bryant treated Pate very good. he might have been bryant's favorite nonfootball athlete at UA. Also, semi-interesting fact, Bryant's golf clubs are on display at the Bama golf complex.

I believe if Brown had to pick it would be T&F not sure about Marlon. Brown ran in the Pan-Am games this year and took 2nd and watch this video he was not happy about it and talked about he needs to be stronger and not take a week off next time, which was for the Opening.

Him and Marlon being 2 sport athletes will have less time to get in trouble and track guys are always pushing themselves to better. Also Brown and Marlon usually did not race against each other because Brown is a year older than Marlon and usually they go by the birth year. Hence why Brown competed at the Pan-Am junior games and Marlon competed in the World Youth.

I think it's really cool that these guys are super talented at T&F and are two of the fastest people in the United States.
That being said I want them to concentrate on Football. Strength and Conditioning staff on the Bama football team, by doing their jobs should get both to a size where the Olypics aren't realistic. I really don't think you can be elite at both. I think if TB has his heart set on T&F then he should be allowed to pursue but not at the expense of half assing his football potential and vice versa.
There are elite athletes who can perform at the highest level in two sports, but I don't think Football and Track and Field are two that would work.

I don't think either will reach their full potential doing both. Which is a shame.

It's extremely difficult and very rare but there is precedent. Marquis Goodwin played WR for UTx, competed in the long jump in the '12 Olympics, and now plays for the Bills. You basically have to be not just elite but a phenom to overcome the hurdles (pardon the pun) associated with splitting time between 2 sports. That's why I said TB or MH might opt to redshirt the '15 season and focus solely on track if he's really serious about making the Olympic team. That had been the plan for Goodwin at Texas but he wound up playing because of injuries to other receivers.

I also remember posters complaining about how CNS hasn't landed top 2 sport prospects and needs to be more accommodating in order to get guys like TB and MH. Now that we've got them, people are concerned about the impact track will have on their football careers. Just an observation

I think playing football along with baseball or basketball can be feasible for ultra motivated individuals because they don't require the body transformation required to run in the olympics. If MH and TB are at the weight the Bama football staff wants them to be, there's no shot of Olympics and the same the other way around.
I don't see any way they can be successful at both at the same time.

Like I said, difficult, not necessarily impossible. They're both sprinters. Have you seen past US sprinters in the Olympics? They're typically jacked like Bo Scarbrough. At least 100m sprinters are. I guess 110m hurdlers aren't as jacked but I don't think the muscle they put on for football will be prohibitive. The biggest obstacle is competing against similarly talented hurdlers who train year around in track.

Man this thread picked up. I really hope they're both just phenoms and get it done.
Also, just looked at Marquise Goodwin and it said Justin Hunter beat him in the NFL combine's broad jump. Apparently Hunter also had aspirations of doing the long jump in Olympics but couldn't because he tore his ACL. So that may be two precedents there.
ETA: Jeff Demps graduated from Florida in spring of 2012 and helped the US win a silver medal in the 400m relay in London a few months later.

The guys you remember complaining are probably the ones that are happy about this. I certainly wasn't one of them. I mean, I hope it works out for both of them, if that's what they want. But, I have my doubts.

Some just do not get it. I can understand someone like Stewart(I think) who came in last year and wants to do T&F along with football needs to focus on just football. But TB and MH are outstanding in both. Were are not talking about 2 kids that did both in HS and starred. We are talking about 2 kids in their age group are in the top 2 in the world. Both who have times for their age on track with medal winners in London when they were that age. Also 2 who are 5 star football players as well.
Demps had no issue with it so I do not see an issue with these 2.
