Brown reportedly facing NCAA suspension
The University of Alabama is reportedly appealing a suspension the NCAA handed down to defensive back Tony Brown, according to the Tuscaloosa News.
On Dec. 30 coach Nick Saban released a statement after Brown was suspended and sent home prior to the Cotton Bowl.
“We have made an internal decision to send Tony Brown home due to a violation of team rules,” Saban said at the time in a release.
So far this spring Brown has been a regular participant in practice. He is currently seeing time at both the Star and the cornerback position.
The Crimson White reached out to the University for comment.

The NCAA issues suspensions for what, drugs and impermissible benefits? Do they issue suspensions for any thing else? I think suspension for pretty much all other issues, such as suspensions for academics, are levied by the institutions.
Of these, I don't think a first positive drug test would be "indefinite," so I have to say he received some sort of impermissible benefit. But then there's not evidence that this is coming back on the University at this time, so who knows.
Edit: apparently Aaron Suttles said it's not related to impermissible benefits, so it pretty much has to be drugs, but I'm not sure how this translates to an "indefinite" ban.

The NCAA doesn't suspend players "indefinitely" very often, unless an investigation is ongoing to determine severity of a punishment or it is eligibility related. And procedurally that usually involves the school declaring a player ineligible "indefinitely." See L. Tunsil 2015.
Perhaps the terminology is just off here. It is a suspension of undefined length, because WE don't know the length, but I imagine the NCAA knows how long, and Alabama is appealing knowing the length. Everything here screams PEDs or something Bama doesn't test for. (Ex. AU didn't test for Spice even while it was a huge problem there)

I've feared that Brown is going to wash out for a while now.

Well Saban has known about this suspension since before Spring practice started and continues to allow TB on the field, sometimes with the 1s.
Does that sound like he is kicking him out of the program to you?

Mark Richt has lost control of Tony Brown.

Sounds like he failed a NCAA drug test, likely at the Cotton Bowl. It will either be 6 games or the whole season. The fact that he is practicing a lot makes me think 6 games with UA appealing in hopes of reducing that number to 3-4.

Was really hoping he could evolve into a safety for us.

I really think they are trying to put the screw job on Tony. I wonder what he did to piss them off?

I don't think their bylaws allow for a reduction. I'm pretty sure it is all or nothing.

FYI TB is competing in the T&F SEC Championships. Not sure what this means with respect to his NCAA suspension

so you would think this has something to do with FB alone if he is allowed to do T and F. Unless the NCAA has allowed him to play spring sports during the appeal?

I find it comforting to know that the staff had him practicing the entire spring. We'll see him on the field this fall.

I don't know for sure but I would think a suspension due to failed NCAA drug test (rumored to be the case) would apply to all sports

He'd better get his shite straight soon. He's running out of eligibility.

I don't believe he will miss a game.

He's going to miss games due to being suspended by Saban.
