Is Alabama no longer capable of playing hardball?

When you are dealing with rats like Kirby and others, you’d better be willing to get down in the sewer.

I would love to know what Saban is doing behind the scenes, if anything, to help keep the roster in tact. On the surface, it looks like nothing.

Not Sabans job to do anything any more.

Our NIL pool isn't as big as some of our competition. Money is the primary motivator now, with coaching a secondary consideration. We're not going to be able to keep as much talent as Georgia, Ohio State, Texas, etc. anymore. Just have to do more with less, and we've got the perfect coach to do that.

Saban is in Florida. Not his job to retain these kids. A lot of our top guys, especially DBs, came to Alabama specifically to learn from Saban. With him gone, plus the money stuff, that’s going to lead to some attrition. Is what it is.

Maybe Texas or A&M but we should be able to match Georgia and Ohio St.

Yeah in this new NIL era, we just cant keep up with the Texas types that will write larger checks.

WE are not the only ones, so it is what it is

I've been saying this is going to be a problem for Alabama since NIL was introduced.

If it's pay to play, we don't have the same bankroll as Texas, Texas A&M. Probably not as much as UGA or Florida for that matter, just thinking in term of a state's wealth. Where does that put Tennessee?

We aren't going to be able to out bid texas.

I can almost guarantee you the net worth of the Georgia and Ohio State alumni base dwarfs ours.

We have, in the past, depended heavily on our name, our brand, our tradition and our history.

We do that at our peril moving forward.

And IMO we would be doing that at our peril moving forward even if there had been no change at coach.

It’s a different world out there now and we need to approach it for how it is, not pine for how it used to be.

That’s not doom and gloom, because I like our chances to adapt and prosper.

Our enrollment is larger than UGA's, a bit smaller than Ohio State's.

However that's a recent phenomenon. We've doubled in size since Saban, most of that coming from out of state students.

Hopefully that will pay dividends in terms of alumni support in the years and decades that follow.

But I would expect the enrollment to pull back some now.

Do you not understand what it means to retire?

The big question is whether a kid from Dallas who went to Alabama for the social scene, got a finance degree along the way, and moved back to Dallas will contribute at the same rate as a kid from Birmingham who grew up going to Bama games, got a finance degree, and still lives in Alabama.

I hate to be negative about the University as I'm a graduate of this fine institution (class of 2009), BUT we still graduate way too many liberal arts students. Liberal arts students, on average, make very little. We need to increase our focus on STEM degrees. We were doing really well for a while increasing our Engineering school but that has hit rock bottom since Dean Karr left to become the President of UAH.

A lot of the out of state students aren't even from relatively close places like Dallas, they're from Chicago and California. I can tell you right now that based on my experience as a student in the mid-Saban years, a lot of those people aren't going to be giving anything to NIL. Many couldn't even be bothered to stay for the full game, even when the score was close.

I do.

Just going off what Saban said. He planned to be ‘around’. Office in BDS.
Help during transition. Etc.

So I ask, what is he doing? Or is he getting a little joy playing Nero?

This is lame. Guy gave his all for 17 years, doubt he gets any joy out of seeing some players leave. At the same time, dude has earned his retirement. No one should be expecting him to be putting in a ton of work.

This kind of post, most of your post history coming since Saban's retirement, and the fact that you joined at the height of the doom posting in September looks pretty suspicious.
