Bateman isn't a scrub. Any weakness he has can be worked on and improved and also schemed around. If you really think about it, getting any true freshman ready to lead the team will be much harder than improving the deep ball from Bateman. Common sense people.

Unless Hurts is a genius and just picks up on everything mentally much quicker than almost every other freshman, his best bet would be to RS or at most have a package for him in certain situations like redzone or short yardage.

Maybe he is a genius and looks at the playbook a couple of times and has it memorized, etc but odds are it will be one of the older guys who has been in the system at least a year. Personally, I think it will be a Bateman/Barnett battle. Only chance BB8 wins it is if he figures out how to protect the ball, which he hasn't done in practice yet. Best bet is Bateman starts against USC...if he owns it, the job is his. If he struggles BB8 will get a shot.

My concern with Bateman is his mental aspects. He just looks incredibly nervous in the pocket, and doesn't seem to work through his progressions. It looks like once his first option is covered, he gets nervous and dumps it to the rb.

I may be off base, but he scares me as the starting qb.

Of course you're worried about Bateman, we all are. There is reason for concern. There is more reason to worry about Hurts.

I disagree. If he's good, he's good. Doesn't really have anything to do with our situation, imo. I respect your opinion though.

First off, if you think that it takes a genius to pick up on a playbook, you are sadly mistaken. It isn't rocket science. And if you think that he's only looked at our playbook "a couple of times" then you are also sadly mistaken.

He looked like he was running the plays at least just as good as any other QB on the team in April, and that was with him only being on campus for 4 months.

I will agree that the odds are against him, but I am of the opinion that he is that special.

Didn't say he was a scrub. However, he has issues like they all do and we need him to be a deep threat because we are loaded at WR. Everyone has a chance but it's very close make no mistake.

a freshman starting at QB for Alabama means there's not any upperclassmen getting the job done.

Well, lets see:

Bateman: weak arm
Cornwell: Hasn't impressed coaches or team, likely has attitude issues
Barnett: Jury is still out

What does "win the team" even mean? Do the players vote by secret ballot on who starts?

Crown tbe guy that performs best in fall camp & scrimmages, Jesus

Come on bro. It's leadership. The guys know who they will go to war with. In 2014, Jake had actually performed better in fall camp but Blake won the team. Saban said that Jake won over the team during the Ole Miss game last year. Winning the team is real, ask coach Saban and it carries more weight than anything else. The guys aren't gonna rally behind a guy they know can't get the job done imo.

Hurts ran for 1,391 yards while also running for 25 touchdowns. With those kinds of numbers, people might assume he is just an athlete playing quarterback, but Hurts also threw for 2,384 yards while adding 26 touchdowns to only 4 interceptions.

Responsible for almost 4,000 yards. That was high school.

I'm excited to see him get better and hopefully put up Games like Deshawn Watson did in the NC Game.

I'm reminded of what Lane Kiffen said about Calvin Ridley. It was something to the effect of "Some young guys get on the big stage and embrace it".

I hope Jalen is one of these Players.

eta: I think the Coaches have a feel for who the Team is behind. Not a popularity contest.but rather, the Team has confidence that that QB will help them win. They may not mean to but they may play with more energy when that QB is behind Center.jmho
