#1 - The defense dominate 2 below average offenses (though at this point I think Tennessee may be an average offense)

vs Tennessee
- 13 pts
- 231 total yards
- 3.79 YPP
- 2 turnovers forced
- 1 defensive TD

vs Arkansas
- 7 pts
- 213 total yards
- 3.80 YPP
- 4 turnovers forced
- 1 defensive TD

Mission accomplished. This is never going to be the 2011 defense, but they played much more complete games and continue to grow up. Lewis is healthy and an absolute nightmare. Christian Harris seems to have found the lightswitch. The secondary, which for some reason continues to be ignored by everyone, has been absolute lights out numbers wise. We still have issues (3rd down, soft middle, inexperience) but they've done what we hoped they'd do : gotten better and more comfortable.

Now they get another off week before their biggest test of the season.

#2 - Continue to gel up front and punish people in the run game

vs Tennessee
- Harris/BRob : 28 carries, 145 yards, 5.18 YPA

vs Arkansas
- Harris/BRob : 26 carries, 153 yards, 5.88 YPA

I think we all agree the offensive line looks as good as it has all year right now and seems to be clicking on all cylinders. Harris and Brian Robinson have found their grove.

BONUS : WE FOUND A PUNTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Would you say our OL and running game has finally become a strength?

I know at the start of the year, we struggled in both areas. Now, the running game looks dominant. Dominant and dependable.

Which begs the questions "Why the frick is Markail Benton ou there in the 1st quarter running around lost as shite?"

Benton is terrible.

I absolutely think it has. It has been a very good pass blocking unit all year, but they've become a really good run blocking group once things stabilized the last month.

And, more importantly to me at least, they've been really good at pure straightforward non-RPO runs. That was the thing we weren't great at last year and never seemed to really get a hold of. This group has some nasty dudes who punish people on traditional run plays (Dickerson, Wills, Brown).

Yea the Benton thing is pretty confusing. He's been here for multiple years and looks like a deer in the headlights. I'm not sure I've ever seen a player openly look that lost more consistently.

It's hard to read much into games against UT and Arkansas, but I do wonder if Tua being out had a galvanizing effect on the defense and running game? If so, that could be a little silver lining with an injury we obviously didn't want: namely, the other parts of the team had to step up and now, hopefully, they have more confidence that they can be elite too and it's not just "Tua and the 4 WR scoring 50 or bust" for this team.

Major improvement indeed.
And I’ll also add that Waddle is a dangerous weapon in the arsenal. You can bet L8U fears him just as much as anyone on the field. And also the fear of blocked punts, Bama has shown they can get to the punter and it’s a major concern going into the game.

This is what the Saints did when Brees went down. The defense and running game took off to overcome the loss of their franchise QB.

Although he'd choke anyone out who suggested it, I think Saban uses games he knows they're going to win as practices, more than any coach I've ever seen. He doesn't coach to beat teams as badly as possible. He coaches to be able to beat everyone down the road.

That's what I like to believe anyway.

I see your avatar lol I am excited as well.

Sidenote the OL is doing well and the run game seems to have gone to a better place.

Defense will give up yards but they are making turnovers and getting to the QB more often than before. Lewis is a stud.

I think there is something to that.

Its encouraging seeing the younger guys on our defense getting better.
The secondary seems to be catching their stride, particularly Diggs. 2 TD's last 2 games.
Terrell Lewis has been an absolute nightmare lately.
Leads the SEC in sacks & had 6 QB hurries in the Arky game.
All we were asking for a couple months ago was no more injuries & steady improvement as the season rolled along & its working out.
LSU's gonna finally score some points on us but create some turnovers, get their punter some playing time, I like our chances.

If you mean we found one that's better than the one we were using, I agree. He's still pretty sketchy, though.

Random but interesting stat

Alabama has only given up 1 play of 40+ yards on defense the entire season. That is good for #1 in the country by ourselves.

Alabama has given up 0 plays of 50+ yards on defense the entire season. That is good for T#1 in the country along with Arizona St, Notre Dame, Oregon and Penn St.

I have very little doubt that this is the case. Saban is not instant gratification oriented nor is he a fool’s gold false flashiness kind of guy. He is smart, calculating and in control. In short, he is the best at what he does, and it isn’t close.

He's not JK Scott but he's punted 4 times for an average of 47 yards per punt. DeLong averaged 34.4 last year and 33.0 this year, which just seems impossibly bad.

I do worry about him getting one blocked, though. He came dangerously close against Arkansas.

But he really mishit his 2nd punt against Arkansas. It was really low, spinning like crazy, and only went about 38 yards in the air. Just got lucky the returner couldn't get to it and it got a nice 10-12 yard bounce.

Yea it wasn't a great one - but like you said, still went 38 yards in the air.

If his mishits are 38 yarders in the air, with our coverage units, I can live with that.

We are more starved for league average punting and kicking than Tennessee is for good football in general
