Impatient with Alabama athletics

I have to give LSU and Auburn (somewhat) credit for having multiple programs in their athletic department as either elite or on the cusp of greatness. Seeing them over the past few years has really made me yearn for our athletics in other sports besides football to get it going already. I know patience is a virtue and I truly believe we have the coaches in place to finally get us there, but my goodness I wish it would hurry up. I was a freshman at Bama the last time our Baseball team hosted a regional (fricking Andrew Miller and UNC!). We were somewhat regulars in March Madness even though the seasons were a little disappointing when I was there too. I would just love for all three major programs in our athletic department to all be clicking at once. Rant over

I have zero percent confidence in our current Athletic Director.

Coleman Coliseum is an airplane hangar with awful sightlines. We have no chance in basketball.

Auburn this past year went to a Final Four and the CWS. LSU went to the Sweet 16, CWS, and won a football natty.

And no, I don't care about women's softball.

Win in the Big 3 - everything else is a hobby for Tuscaloosa townies.

Leave it to this slack-jawed goober who captained the ship at fricking Mississippi State and Arizona (Big timer!) to lead us into mediocrity across the board. Football is only a success because of Saban.

Byrne has led improvements to BDS that have left long-time season ticket holders out in the cold, all while leaving other facilities unaddressed.

I can also absolutely guarantee that we will be dead last to serve alcohol at sporting events as well. Absolutely laughable.

I'm sorry. Did I say something that was confusing Bham4Tide? Maybe I'm biased but I thought it was a well-worded post. Sorry it's not about bashing a defensive coordinator that we have multiple pages about

I actually have more confidence in Byrne than I did with Battle. I think he made excellent hires in Basketball and Baseball. It's just going to take a little time, but I'm ready for it to start happening (Hence why I started this thread)

I like the renderings of the renovations. I think it will be practically new. Construction costs has skyrocketed over the past 4 or 5 years unfortunately.

Again, our AD is Byrne but your complaints are not entirely unwarranted especially if a season ticket holder in the new sections.

What do you have against Greg Byrne? He's been excellent so far. We're currently in this mess because of Battle.

Yeah I don't really understand blaming Byrne for the issues with facility upgrades or the fact that both the baseball and men's basketball programs suck right now. Battle cost us an obscene amount of money with his pathetic negotiation with Nike and how do you get shithead FOG boosters to allow a red dime of their money to go to literally anything besides the football program? By promising that BDS will get upgrades first. It's bullshite, but it is the unfortunate reality of having to raise money for facility improvement projects at Alabama. And Battle is the one who made the unforgivably bad Goof hire and allowed himself to not only be publicly humiliated by a douchebag mid-major basketball coach, but failed to have any sort of backup plan after that public humiliation was completed and panic hired a washed up former NBA coach who called to beg for the job.

What the frick are you talking about? Mediocre would be an improvement for most of our teams from when Byrne took over.

Yea, I’m not understanding the Byrne hate. I think he’s an excellent AD and it’s going to take him time to climb out of the Battle hole. Battle was a tragic mistake that cost the University a ton of money

What's wrong is patience. It's obviously a gift that the OP has precious little of.

Yes, obviously it's just me I guess. Maybe you are blessed with more patience than me but at what point will you get impatient with our basketball program and baseball program not making any postseason run? We haven't been to a super regional in what 7 years? Hell, we haven't even made it to the SEC Tourney in 3 years. We haven't made it to the second weekend in basketball in 16 years?

Again this was just a rant that I was hoping to get a discussion going and thought others felt the same way, but from looking at this thread it looks like I'm in the minority.

No one is happy about the other programs but Byrne isn’t the issue. The decline actually started under Mal. I do get pissed off that we don’t make significant upgrades to basketball facilities.

I never said Byrne was the issue. In fact, I think he is a great AD. The whole Byrne issue started with another poster

I never said that it came out of your mouth. I just said Byrne wasn’t the issue. I don’t give a shite who said it, I was just making a broad statement for whoever it applies to.

No problem

I wish that I had the answers. The easiest and most obvious answer would be to pour more money into the facilities and the programs, but I’m sure that’s overly simplistic

You are impatient about the last 20 years of basketball futility. Join the club. Byrnes has upgraded the head coach spot with Oats and it will take time to see it through. I was thinking Saturday about the injuries this team has suffered and just when we start doing something consistent with this year's model than we are hit with another injury to Jones, our glue guy. A big, big blow for a team struggling for the right pieces anyway.

Not getting our transfer eligible was another shot to a delicate balance with multiple season-ending injuries and then not being able to talk Tevin Mack out of the transfer portal. I've already said my piece about Watford and his gold-digging ways, but he was a Bama commit.

Impatience for me is when Anthony Grant was given a 5th year as head coach. In looking back, what did we learn in year 6 that we didn't know in year 4? But that was not on Greg Byrnes's watch.

Agreed. I think he sold our asses down the river to make a dollar. Talking to an old guy a couple months back that worked in the athletic dept. He said that Battle would stab his own mother in the back if it meant he could make some money. After he broke it off in us on the Nike deal, I was ready for him go.

I think it is too early to judge Byrne. I agree, that we need some improvement for Baseball and Basketball, but those programs take a little longer to turn around. Especially with so few scholarships as opposed to the states surrounding us that have a lottery. I am cautiously optimistic about both coaches (Oates/ Bohanon). Only time will tell.

Baseball and basketball are looking up. They were in a bad place when the current coaches were hired. Oats is in year 1 and still, you can see the improvement. Give them a chance. Bohannon needs to show some significant movement this year and I think he will. If not, then i think he needs to start feeling some heat.

If you want to point a finger, point it at Battle who created much of this mess as been previously mentioned. He was allowed to linger too long and fricked up everything he touched but he was one of “Barr’s Baws” so he got a pass until it could no longer be ignored. Will we ever learn?
