Giving up on Milroe/Simpson for Buchner would be a MISTAKE

Stick with Milroe and Simpson. We will win with one of them.

Why do people keep conflating taking Buchner with giving up on the existing QB's? I personally don't think he's good enough to bother taking but if Saban does let him transfer in it doesn't mean anyone, Saban included, is giving up on Simpson or Milroe.

This is the first I'm hearing about Buchner, but you hit the nail on the head.

I'm not sure how potentially bringing in another QB that's more for depth, than anything else, is giving up on the others. If a QB is that scared of Buchner that he transfers, good riddance. This just seems like a guy you kick the tires on since he already has a good rapport with the OC.

Screw it, throw Lonergan out there. Let him sling it.

We won't have 5 scholarship qbs on the roster. I don't know why we'd bring him in for depth.

For what it's worth, my ND fan boss says ND fans think he was the most talented of their QB's and would have started next year.

He had a Bama offer in high school. As I understand it, he's been held back by injuries at ND.

His HS scouting report:
quote:

A dynamic signal caller who showed he was completely recovered from a torn ACL injury with a dominant junior season. Has always been a dynamic athlete and was a nationally known lacrosse player in middle school. Physically, has an athletic frame and looks like a running back when he gets out in the open field. Has tremendous escape-ability and a unique sense for making a defender miss and extending plays. Has a live arm and can throw outside the pocket rolling to his right or his left equally well. Has tightened his release over the last year and improved mechanically. Shows accuracy on the deep ball and will continue to improve as a pure pocket passer with more game experience. A tough kid who will need to reign in his running a bit at the college level to stay healthy but you have to love the fire he plays with. Projects as a impact upper tier Power 5 starter and future high round NFL draft pick.

I totally agree, these guys didn't play terrible at all it would be one thing if they were God awful but their just raw. I think getting Buchner would do more harm than good to the QB room and the next few classes.

Alabama has a a good run of QBs lately. Tua, Mac and Young. Really elite QBs. It's going to take some getting used to not having a elite QB.

If Alabama can establish a great running attack, then whoever the QB is just needs to be able to read a defense and complete forward passes with decent accuracy and Bama will be fine. Bama just needs a Jake Coker type QB and the offense will work.

Bama can not afford to go back to the barely can complete a forward pass years of 2016 and 2017 though.

Milroe was a 4-star top 100 prospect. Simpson was a 5-star top 30 prospect. I still think it's too early to say we won't have an elite QB.

We all know rankings don't matter. Barnett was a 5 star and on of the highest rated QBs to sign with Bama. Total bust. Mac was a lower rated 4 star and turned out to be a 1st rounder.

Your right though, any of the QBs could be a stud. Young looked awful as a backup in 20 and the Clemson backup in 20, the DJ kid, looked like a world beater. Look how that turned out.

I think I'll trust the coaches that see these dudes in practice every day. If they believe outside help is needed while the other two develop for one more year, there's a darn good reason they are going that route and we should all be thankful that they are. We also have to keep in mind, they may bring in a guy to be a solid back-up option should the starter get injured. And the way both Milroe and Ty run, that's a definite possibility.

Depth and familiarity with the offense. It's always good to have a QB on hand that can help the QB room get better.

If he comes in and plays well enough to win the QB1 role, then good for him. It's not like anything is going to be given to him. Saban may not be a hard edged as he was 15 years ago, but he's not gone that soft.

Players improve over time, but Buchner was awful last year.

I’d be surprised if we do take him and very surprised if he can beat out Milroe or Simpson.

It’s pretty common for guys to fabricate some Bama interest to try to build up hype with other teams. That could be the case here.

Bama doesn't invite transfer guys to come on visits if there's no interest. There is clearly interest on both sides. Whether he comes or not is a different story. My guess is Saban is going to see what else may be out there before he green-lights Buchner.
