Our defense and special teams hit the shite out of people. It’s been a long time since our defense lowered the boom on people like we have been. Yeah we lost to Texas but we were blowing them up on tackles. Ole Miss felt that for sure.

Lot of football left.

But in that one moment in time, I saw a nastiness flash from the defense that I hadn't seen in quite some time.

Guess it's Steele's influence?

Agree. haven't seen licks laid like that in a number of years. I was especially surprised to see life from our DL. It seemed to help them with more rotation from the 2's.

The offense is still... They are on life support. It's not that they utterly lack talent, but they will have 8 good plays and then someone will make a mistake so wildly bad that it negates everything they did. I've never seen an O lose so many TD's to penalties ever. If they could get all 11 guys to just focus on every play they could potentially score on anyone. just stop giving it all away. I have noticed that the OL though bad, does tend to wear on defenses and it starts showing in the 4th.

I agree the rotation seemed to really help.

I agree. I’d love that stat to completely reverse lol.

Yeah the defense can only do so much and Saturday they held a high scoring team to 10.

Lane Kiffin's worst scoring output at Ole Miss against an SEC team. The only other time an SEC team held him to 10 or fewer was in 2009 when Bama held UT to 10 in the Mt Cody game.

Ole Miss has a pretty solid offense and Bama shut that shite down.

In the second half Ole Miss ran 38 plays for 128 yards, which is 3.37 yards per play. They had to convert several 4th downs just to get that many plays and they scored 3 points.

Bama ran 30 plays for 226 yards, a 7.53 average, and scored 17 points. Could have been 21 points if the refs could count to 4 correctly.

So in the second half Bama's defense played like the best defense in the country (3.37 would be the fewest yards per play in the country) and the offense played like a borderline top 10 squad (7.53 would be 11th in the country).

I'd say that after that second half, we are off of life support for now.

I am hopeful that they can build off that and continue getting better. If they can start clicking consistently, then we will be in business.

Defense is playing better IMO yes

Is that because the scheme/assignments are simplified going from Steele to Golding? Idk but that would make sense

Overall the defense looks more sure of themselves, and we now that when a player knows what they're supposed to do, they can play faster. Tackling has looked a lot better for the most part as well

I didn’t get to see the second half. Can’t wait to watch it. My dad said it looked like an old school Bama football team.

Maybe they just need a few games to get it figured out.

Hopefull that this will continue and I’m pleased to give the players and staff credit and will be thrilled to admit I was wrong about everything if this becomes a trend.

The overreactions in the game thread after the lone TD drive from Ole Miss were classic. Ready to let Steele walk, wondering who we could get to replace him, saying he had no clue how to defend modern CFB offenses.

Ole Miss scores 3 points the entire rest of the game.

looks to me like they've ended the "grab'em around the waist and roll'em to the ground rugby tackling" experiment. looks like they're getting back to knock'em in the dirt make it hurt tackling, like it's supposed to do.

Ole Miss did not present a particularly good defense. Certainly not high end. The offense has another week to improve before they have to show they can do more than run a little and hit a long ballevery now and then.

A good pass rush can kill the long ball and stacking the box with good players can limmit the run game. Let's hope the improvements continue.

I don't even click the game threads during the game anymore.

You have to take the game threads with a grain of salt. They're a collective of moment in time emotions. I called us a 5 loss team in the first half. Do I belive that? Not really, but it certainly felt like it at the time.

Steele and Robinson have simplified things. Golding overcomplicated things.

There's a reason they purge the score board every week. Nothing in the game threads (or on the board during the games) should be taken seriously, posts by myself included.

I agree. I think throwing it deep even if it doesn’t connect is a good thing. Ole Miss seemed to respond to the threat of it. With Milroe we run him, throw deep, power run middle. Rinse and repeat. We did have some nice middle passes I wasn’t expecting. Just keep improving. That’s all we can do.

Yea, Look I'm all for not hitting anyone in the head. There is no need for it, it's dangerous for you and for them. I'm also not ok with head ramming people in the knee as we've seen others do to us so often.

BUT...

Everything between the head and the knee is fair game and tacklers need to dole out punishment when they tackle, it does make a difference in the 4th when they are black and blue. This whole kinder gentler football aint never going to fly, nobody EVER holds back on us and if you wantch the NFL they are knocking the ever loving crap out of each other in the league so these guys better git it down.

I believe we are headed in the right direction defensively. but in modern football it's hard to hold a team to less than 21 points. What they did to Ole Miss was outstanding.
