He was an All-SEC defensive back for Alabama on that famed 1952 team that defeated Syracuse in the Orange Bowl by the score of 61-6. Up until recently it was the most lopsided win in a bowl game in college football history. Hootie Ingram returned an interception for a touchdown to end the game, his coaches jokingly remarking that he was so slow that he ran the clock out.
In 1989 he replaced the late Steve Sloan as athletic director and was instrumental in the hiring of Gene Stallings - a man who needs no introduction. He also gracefully bit the bullet after the Antonio Langham scandal and resigned when the NCAA released its sanctions against us in 1995. Sadly his replacement was Bob Bockrath, a man who didn't seem to understand football or Alabama's obsession with it. That hire would end up costing us dearly down the road.
