quote:

Tackles: Shon Coleman, Auburn (+14.1) and Dominick Jackson, Alabama (+11.0)

At the start of the season Cam Robinson may have been favorite to land the starting left tackle spot, but his sophomore slump has really opened the way for Coleman. He had some problems in pass pro against Mississippi State but has held up outside that. At right tackle Jackson has moved into the starting lineup and replaced Austin Shepherd seamlessly, allowing just nine quarterback disruptions all year.

quote:

Defensive Interior: Jarran Reed, Alabama (+29.7) and Robert Nkemdiche, Mississippi (+17.4)

The strength of Reed in the running game is truly something to behold. No player on the interior comes close to his run defense grade while his 17 defensive stops against the run are naturally the most of any defensive lineman. Partnering him is the more balanced Nkemdiche who has delivered some big moments already this year, especially his relentless showing against Alabama.

quote:

Linebackers: Kentrell Brothers, Missouri (+25.8) and Reggie Ragland, Alabama (+18.8)

If you put on the tape of any Missouri game Brothers jumps out at you. He’s just incredibly active. Compare him to any linebacker in the nation and his 53 defensive stops (offensive failures as a result of his tackle) are 16 more than the next best guy. Ragland does a little more in the passing game than Brothers and the two combine to just about keep out Josh Forrest from Kentucky.

quote:

Cornerbacks: Marlon Humphrey, Alabama (+11.3), Jalen Tabor, Florida (+6.3) and Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alabama (+3.9)

Almost a clean sweep for Alabama but the four touchdowns Cyrus Jones has allowed sees Tabor leap him. Credit to Tabor, with Vernon Hargreaves hurt he’s stepped up impressively. Fitzpatrick gets the nod as the top slot corner in the conference.

quote:

Safeties: Marcus Maye, Florida (+13.4) and Eddie Jackson, Alabama (+13.4)

It’s hard to look past Jackson who has five FBS interception and two more pass break ups. Maye hasn’t posted those kind of stats but is a bigger presence in the run game (as evidenced by his 14 extra tackles).

Eddie Jackson has been great as a middle of the field safety this year. Playing as a poor man's version of Ed Reed. He keeps finding ways to appear where the QB isn't expecting him.

And opposing fans still think our secondary is a weakness.

Proud of all those guys. I'm surprised Cyrus isn't on there as he has played well for the most part, but I guess the 4 TDs like they said is what kept him off. I wonder how close he was to making it? Glad to see Hump on there, he's quietly been one of the better first year players at CB we've had under Saban.

minkah and humphrey are better than kirkpatrick and milliner were as 1st year players, playing in a much harder offensive climate than those 2 did

Which is scary.

Plus Harrison.

Starting to look very unlikely but if Eddie Jackson comes back and we have Evans/Williams playing more on the edges that secondary is gonna be an all timer, barring slumps.

Next year's defense should not drop off too much. They will lack depth on the ends, but hopefully some of the younger guys can step up. Maybe we can flip a certain 5*

Losing Ragland will hurt, but we'll return Reuben and SDH and they're both getting experience this year. Plus Ryan Anderson has played a lot, he'll move into a starting role. Then I guess Evans starts at Sam.

DL loses all the starters, except for Payne who starts in the 34 IIRC. Then Hand moves up along with Dalvin Tomlinson. The depth behind them will be the concern, but we'll have some experience on the DL from next year's starters.

But of course we'll all be pulling our hair out over another QB battle.

Outside spots should be interesting, all 3 known candidates are known passrushers, but none really serve well as a linebacker.

Devall ans Lee play the role as tradition LBs, with Lee getting the bump when they shift formations. Devall is often still in their as the 3rd LB, even on some passing downs.

So essentially 1 of 3 things will happen with the spot:

1) They step up in their responsibilities as LBs
2) The scheme is changed to protect their weaknesses
3) They move someone from the ILB depth to help early downs

I hope they step up their responsibilities, I think at least Evans and Anderson have the potential to do that.

With that said, where are Adonis Thomas and Joshua McMillon taking reps at? They could both be ILBers or Sams, IMO.

Also, I wonder how far along Mekhi Brown is gonna be next season and whether he'll be an all around guy in 2016 or more of a pass rush guy with his length?

Thomas is inside, McMillon is with the OLBs IIRC. Josh might end up huge, like 260 big. His weight fluctuated a lot in HS.

Mekhi needed weight, depending on how much he develops, he could see a package role. He could also end up like Stinson, go from like 230 to 280.

I would throw out Jamey Mosley if he keeps putting on good weight as a potential part timer eventually.

There's a #97 that practices/practiced with the OLB Arkansas week that I have no clue who it was. Looked big. Then came 2 #48s(2nd being Mekhi), and then Hootie at the end.

Did Hootie move to OLB, or is he just being cross trained? Thinking about it I bet he could be a stellar Sam and Money.

It could have been a plethora of things:

*Cross training
*Scout team
*More LB bodies needed for drills(as it was Arky week)

I haven't seen in mentioned, so I'm not sure he has moved anywhere. He might need to though with the development of younger guys...

Had Hootie played before A&M? Saturday was the first time I recall seeing him on the field.

Pretty sure he has played in garbage time and I think he's on kick coverage, though I'm not 100% sure.

I hope he finds a role. He's a talented guy and quite frankly very physically imposing. I think he could be an enforcer on defense.

Humphrey should have had another INT. They didn't review it in the A&M game.

The secondary has been so awesome this year. Hardly ever out of position, great at locating the ball and breaking it up from the receivers hands.

Our Dime package may legitimately have 4 DBs who will eventually be 1st round picks. Maybe.
