Do y’all think it’s a matter of coaching or personnel?

Whoever plays at QB will likely be someone of a downgrade from Tua. Maybe that will result in a more balanced approach and therefore a better defense.

It is absolutely a combination. However, I think Golding has to go. It’s one thing for inexperienced players to make mistakes. It’s another to be in the last regular game of the season still making the exact same errors that could’ve been corrected weeks before. To be fair, we’ve seen some of this really flare up in some previous big games, but not on this consistent of a level to where the offense is literally carrying us. Making half assed attempts to strip the ball instead of make a tackle, absolutely BLOWN coverages, barely any coverage in the flat, zero pass rush, zero push up front to eliminate inside runs. Remember when we were so dominate up front that we were pretty much forcing everyone to throw if they wanted a chance to win? I’m not saying I expected that this year, but to get gashed like we have been? Unacceptable. I find it hard to believe that every player on the team was prone to non-progression versus Golding just simply not being fit for a DC position.

I think it was almost completely a product of injuries, a few bad attitudes, and a few recruiting misses in the past. Five clones of Buddy Ryan as the defensive staff wouldn't have faired much better. It's also important to note how crazy and difficult modern offenses are to defend. The RPO was a game changer, pun intended.

Our offensive style change has had an effect as well.

I get that we need results now and that it is a different era, but if we had canned Kirby after 2007 then he would never have developed into what ultimately would be one of our best coordinators of all time.

If we're tired of our staff getting poached, we are going to have to develop our coaches.

That's an excellent take, Fells.

Wasn't Steele the guy in 07?

This. If you go back and watch the film of some of the teams running the RPO (even Alabama), you’ll notice how difficult it is to defend.

Am I wrong or did we give up a crazy amount of passes in the middle of the field? Like we weren’t even trying to defend the pass.

The telltale sign to me is this: inexperience/personnel issues aside, our defense showed little if any growth and improvement in the Iron Bowl compared to the defense that faced Duke. Some players actually regressed. I don’t care if we’re playing a bunch of walk ones, they should be better by game 13 with good coaching. That didn’t happen.
