Saban firm on Jalen Hurts at QB; says Tua Tagovailoa, Mac Jones are backups

For the first time since AJ McCarron (2012-13), Alabama football returns a starter at quarterback. During Tuesday’s practice, there was only one line of signal callers and it was led by sophomore Jalen Hurts.

Now at 6-foot-2 and 214 pounds, the native Texan intends to build off a year in which he had 2,780 passing yards, 954 rushing yards and 36 touchdowns. Upon the end of the session, coach Nick Saban spoke on the quarterback situation. Despite having one year of experience, he remains firm on Hurts as the starter.

“Because we do have starting a quarterback returning, I think it’s easier for us to self assess what we need to better for him to help him develop in areas that will make him be more of a complete player,” Saban said.

“And especially in the passing game. We are going to work hard this spring and in the fall. So if he can do that and be more of a dual threat guy, it will be really difficult for defenses to defend him.”

As for the two popular freshmen in the Crimson Tide’s 2017 signing class – Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones – Saban said both guys will have to grow into being adequate backups by fall camp.

“This is the least amount of experience we’ve had at quarterback, despite having a starter back,” he said. “But I like all three guys and the attitude that they are showing. I think all three have the potential to be great.”

Nick Saban names OL Lester Cotton as possible option at right guard.

Alabama football returns three starters from last year’s offensive line – Bradley Bozeman, Ross Pierschbacher and Jonah Williams – yet it must find options at left tackle and right guard.

When it comes to both observing and critiquing offensive linemen, Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban said the focus from both he and his staff will be geared toward putting the best five guys on the field.

“We don’t have a depth chart right now. We have a rep chart,” Saban said on Tuesday.

“I can’t really tell you after one day of practice who’s doing great on the offensive line. It’s hard to evaluate those guys in the offseason program, because no one struggles more than the big guys. It will be interesting to see how those guys do now that we’re practicing football and their playing in a short area.”

While Saban stated that the team needs someone to come through at left tackle, he did mentioned rising junior Lester Cotton as a viable option on the interior line.

“Lester Cotton played at right guard today,” he said. “He’s played there before.”

Listed at 6-foot-4 and 324 pounds, Cotton started three games at right guard a season ago. He turned in a clutch performance against Tennessee, helping the Tide account for 594 yards of total offense.

The Tuscaloosa native blocked for 409 rushing yards, including 100-yard efforts from quarterback Jalen Hurts and running back Bo Scarbrough. Cotton aided Hurts to 114 yards rushing and a touchdown on 20 carries in Alabama’s 10-0 win over LSU, while guiding Scarbrough to 180 yards and two scores versus Washington.

Despite being switched to tackle down the stretch in 2016, he’s played a lot of football under Saban.

Nick Saban on Tide’s D-Line for next season: “I don’t compare anything to anything”

Next man up is a popular phrase in Tuscaloosa, Ala., however, it becomes difficult to expect that in football when one has to replace Jonathan Allen and Dalvin Tomlinson on the defensive line.

The two along with Reuben Foster, Ryan Anderson and Tim Williams were the leaders behind some astronomical numbers in the last two seasons, including 106 sacks, 56 turnovers and 15 touchdowns.

Despite the four and five-stars competing this spring and returning in the fall, questions on will this year’s group be just as effective are appropriate at this juncture. Even for the man who has coached this team to four national championships, Nick Saban could only drop a few names that have the potential to anchor this unit.

“I don’t know,” Saban said on Tuesday. “Isaiah Buggs could be a good player. Da’Shawn Hand has been a good player. Da’Ron Payne’s played a lot of football around here for two years and has done well. Raekwon Davis played some last year and Josh Frazier has played a bit.”

As for redshirt freshman Quinnen Williams and the Crimson Tide’s 2017 signees, Saban said Williams will have to play some and that all need to get better and improve.

“We’ve played with worse,” he said. “I don’t compare anything to anything. We could have said when Dont’a Hightower and Rolando McClain were the two inside ‘backers’ and when they left, we would compare them to the next guys. Well, that’s not fair to the next guys. And it’s not fair to compare these guys to the ones we had last year or ones we had before. They have to develop and identity of their own as a unit and as individuals.”

Numbers wise, Da’Shawn Hand and Da’Ron Payne are the new leaders.

Hand has recorded 44 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and seven sacks in three seasons, while Payne has 49 career tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks. Alabama’s journey back to a Southeastern Conference championship game and possibly the College Football Playoff will be decided on its front line.

Alabama’s Minkah Fitzpatrick “excited” about returning to cornerback

Versatility birthed Minkah Fitzpatrick into a star during his first two years at Alabama.

In lining up at both star and safety – replacing Eddie Jackson – the New Jersey native helped the Crimson Tide win two Southeastern Conference championships and a College Football Playoff national championship in 2015, earning Freshman All-American and first team All-American honors.

Fitzpatrick has accounted for 111 tackles, eight tackles for loss, three sacks, 18 pass breakups and eight interceptions (four returned for touchdowns), but looks to be returning to a familiar position.

Before signing in the Tide’s 2015 recruiting class, the 6-foot-1, 201-pounder was a five-star prospect and one of the nation’s elite cornerbacks. He watched the trio of Cyrus Jones, Marlon Humphrey and Anthony Averett anchor both spots in 2015 and 2016, but as of spring ball and the 2017 football season, Fitzpatrick has expressed excitement in returning to his old roots.

He told Michael Bratton of Saturday Down South that “he’s where he is most comfortable” at cornerback, during Thursday’s player interviews before the team’s second practice session.

After seeing the damage he created against offenses in different roles, Tide fans can only imagine the havoc Fitzpatrick will inflict on quarterbacks and receivers in his most natural state. With Humphrey pursuing the National Football League, Fitzpatrick and Averett will be the outside corners while Tony Brown and Shyheim Carter work at both corner and star.

Shaun Dion Hamilton or Rashaan Evans: Who’s the next alpha dog for Tide’s defense?

Boom! Ohh!!! What comes to mind when you hear these sounds?

If you’ve been following Bama football, these were sounds from the crowd every time former Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster made a hit on an opposing player. If you ask any running back or receiver about Foster, they’ll more than likely say they knew what time it was when a player was in the vicinity of Foster.

Alabama is never in a “rebuilding process” when it loses a star player.

Shaun Dion Hamilton looks to be the next man up in line, but is currently recovering from an ACL injury that he suffered in the SEC Championship game last year against Florida. He had a strong junior year before the mishap, racking up 64 tackles, nine tackles for loss, two sacks and an interception through 13 games.

While Hamilton will be limited throughout spring practice, Rashaan Evans assumed the role as leader for inside linebackers during Tuesday’s practice. Evans, who was recruited as a top-ranked outside ‘backer,’ has earned reps at both spots in the last two years. He collected 4.5 tackles for loss and four sacks in 2016.

Evans’ aggressive style fits in a leadership role at Alabama. He possesses the capabilities of being instinctive, as well as being sound run stopper and edge rusher. The Crimson Tide has put so many great linebackers in the National Football League from Rolando McClain to Reggie Ragland, and now, Reuben Foster is next in line.

Alabama’s spring game is scheduled for Saturday, April 22 at Bryant Denny Stadium and Tide fans can only hope for a speedy recovery for Hamilton. Fans, who do you see starting in place of Foster?

Nick Saban updates status on Bo Scarbrough, Shaun Dion Hamilton

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.– While the majority of Alabama players fully participated in Tuesday’s debut of spring practice, the Tide had a couple of guys in non-contact jerseys. During his presser, coach Nick Saban addressed the statuses of four players, including running back Bo Scarbrough and linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton.

“As you all know, Shaun Dion Hamilton had an ACL injury during the SEC championship game,” Saban said.

“He’s been able to do some things. He is dry land running, but will be limited throughout the spring. Bo Scarbrough and B.J. Emmons are doing individual drills and are able to do some things.”

Saban continued with: “Both guys will probably make progress throughout spring and be able to go soon.”

Prior to suffering a knee injury versus Florida, Hamilton turned in a strong junior year. He recorded 64 tackles, two sacks, a quarterback hurry, a pass breakup, a forced fumble and an interception. Scarbrough tallied 812 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, before sustaining a leg injury against Clemson in the College Football Playoff national title game. Emmons totaled 175 yards and a score on 35 attempts, prior to his injury.

Sophomore defensive back Jared Mayden was also banged up after last season.

“Jared Mayden had a hip injury that required surgery,” Saban said. “He’s going to be limited throughout the spring. His participation will be very little, but we expect him to make a full recovery.”

Just perused the list of 5-stars per BOL that we are pursuing.Pretty depressing to note as of today, not one of them is favoring us,we have a chance with about three of them. Know things will change but this is the slowest start for recruiting that I can remember in Saban's tenure. Bet this is the result of all our coaches leaving.

Agreed. I think it's definitely due to having to get new guys in place and establish contacts and relationships with people. The question becomes will we close strong after the slow start or will this be the year that breaks our streak of #1 classes?

Never doubt Saban but I really think the streak will end next year. Our depth and departed coaches will do us in. But I have been known to be wrong before, once or twice.

There's actually a lot to post, recruiting-wise, from this weekend but I have a killer hangover so it'll have to wait until tomorrow.

The wife and I went out last night and I drank some Alaskan IPA and it kicked the shite out of me.
