Sims

Has thrown for more yards in a single season than any other Bama qb. Never really wowed me at all with his running ability. Sure he could escape at times, but Amari running down bombs is what I remember from Sims.

I'm just saying that what has worked for us (and most teams), in the past as far as going all the way...we've seemed to change from that. Sure, made sense when kiffin was here with tunnel screens and roll-outs. Daboll I'm not so sure...we'll see I guess.

When is the last duel threat Qb to win an ncaa title? You could say Newton, but he could make almost ALL of the throws in college. Clemson's Qb, same thing.. he could pick a team apart.
Imo, they were pass first Qbs, with escapability. I guess they would be considered duel threat, but imo they beat teams for the most part with their arm.

Pretty much every team that has won a title in recent years except for us had a dual threat QB. Cardale Jones at Ohio State. Newton. Tebow. Winston wasn't one, but almost all of the others were. We've won half the titles over that span. We haven't had great QBs (I even argue that AJ wasn't one... he was really good, but not great, IMO... if he were, with all of that other talent on the field with him, how did we ever lose a game?), but have generally been so much better than everybody else at the other positions (and solid and relatively mistake-free at QB) that it didn't matter. It's getting tougher and tougher to do that without a top QB. It just happens to be more difficult to find an ELITE passing QB (that isn't a dual threat) than a dual threat (that's a great runner and sufficient passer). IMO, if we take a pocket passer over a dual threat guy, the pocket passer had better be a MUCH better passer than the dual threat guy. If it's close and all other things are about equal (intangibles, off the field stuff, ability to learn and be coached), I prefer to take the dual threat guy every time.

With the CB predictions rolling in for Trey Dean, I added him in the class calculator. It's good for a jump to #36.

A great average points per player. Just low on numbers.

USC - Matt Leinart
Texas - Vince Young
Florida - Leak
LSU - Matt Flynn
FLorida - Tebow
Bama - McElroy
AU - Cam
Bama - McCarron
Bama - McCarron
FSU - Winston
OSU - Jones
Bama - Coker
Clemson - Watson

of the 9 non-Bama championships, 5 won by what you could call Dual Threat QBs and 4 won by more traditional QBs (and I think of Jones as more traditional than Dual Threat, but counted him as DT since you did).

I think it is really more about the team around the QB than it is in the QB in all the above except Cam and VY.

There was a ton of talent around Young at Texas. An embarrassment of riches wasted. Crazy they only won two conference titles in all those years under Mack Brown.

True. But you're going back sort of pre-Spread (or at least what Spread offenses have become) there. It didn't really hit in force until around Tebow's time.

Recent years doesn't mean 2005. It means 2012/2013~-onward and even then that's going back a bit considering the development of offenses from pro-spread to HUNH.

Outside of us, the only team to win with a "traditional" spread QB is FSU with Winston in recent years. Given where our coaching and talent level stands, that's not really significant in the argument. We haven't faced a team in the championship that's run with a pro-style QB. The majority of the NY6 bowl teams all use dual threat QB's with the exception of Michigan and FSU. Stanford runs a pro-style, but Hogan was a consistent dual threat who could run it 7-8 times a game every year. Can you still win it with a pro-style QB? Sure, but it's not the best option.

Says who? The best option is the QB that knows the playbook and limits mistakes. And can obviously create explosive plays. If that's an AJ McCarron or Jake Coker, that's fine. If it's a Blake Sims or Jalen Hurts, that works as well. I'd rather multiple, with the ability to use either.

Almost regret typing this because I know how cliche it sounds, but we landed some commits this past weekend. As to why the haven't been made public I don't know. I know of at least 3 for 2019 that are huge and some for 2018.

I believe Jaylen McCullough is one. He's a 5* safety for the c/o 2019. I think Clay Webb will go public soon. Our 2019 class will be ridiculous.

Alabama makes big move with 5-star prospect committed to LSU

Kenyon Green hadn’t been talking much with Alabama prior to last weekend. He decided to make the drive from his hometown of Humble, Texas, to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to compete in the Crimson Tide’s offensive line/defensive line camp on Saturday.

Before he left, the Class of 2019 5-star tackle who’s committed to LSU picked up an offer from Nick Saban himself.

LSU is Green’s dream school, which is the reason why he committed to the Tigers the day they offered last year; however, he’s not locked in with his commitment just yet.

“I’m still committed, but I’m still looking,” Green told SEC Country. “Alabama is looking very nice right now. I just love how [offensive line] Coach [Brent] Key coaches his players, and I just love the program.”

Alabama, along with Baylor, Florida, Oklahoma, TCU, Texas and Texas A&M are the schools trying to flip Green from his commitment to LSU. Green said now that Alabama has offered him a scholarship, the Tide will be a contender for him until he makes his commitment.

“It’s amazing to get offered from them,” Green said. “When I was sitting there with Coach Saban, I was just trying to stay straight-faced. Inside, I was extremely happy and just jumping up and down. I was just trying to stay serious because Coach Saban — that is a serious man right there.

“You’re just trying to stay focused because you want to pick up on every little detail he says. He knows what he’s talking about, so you just have to take it in and roll with it.”

The 6-foot-5, 315-pound prospect worked out for Saban and Key last weekend where they played Green at every position on the offensive line except center.

Green said he considers himself “an athlete” when it comes to the offensive line and believes he could play any position in college. The main thing that stood out to him on his first visit to Alabama was the level of competition there and how everyone has a common goal.

“Everyone there was just ready to work,” Green said. “I loved the intensity of the camp. There weren’t many breaks. All you do is just keep working and fighting to be that top guy. You just keep rolling there until you get tired. I love doing that.”

The nation’s No. 2 tackle in the 2019 class says he could possibly shut down his recruitment next summer after he analyzes how the schools he’s considering perform this fall.

That’s going to be important for Green because there are some unknowns with how LSU will do under its first full season with Ed Orgeron at the helm.

“That’s the main thing,” Green said when it comes to what the Tigers will need to do to keep him committed. “I need to see what Coach Orgeron does this year and see how LSU looks. LSU, since Les Miles was fired, is trying new things. They’re on a different path now. I think they’re going to do really well this season, but I think Alabama is going to do well, too, so it’s going to be tough.”

He expanded on his thoughts on Alabama.

“Nick Saban has been there for a really long time. It’s a good routine that they have at Alabama. It’s a cool thing to see. It’s like a recording at Alabama. You see the same thing over and over and over again.”

Another positive for the Tide’s chances at signing one of the elite offensive linemen in next year’s class is the environment of Tuscaloosa. Religion is very important to Green and he felt like the city meshed with his beliefs.

“I loved that they had so many churches surrounding the school,” Green said. “They were everywhere. I love that. I’m a Baptist, so it was awesome to see so many churches. The campus is just historical. It’s a nice place.”

While on the visit, Green spent the majority of his time hanging out with 2019 Alabama 4-star tackle commit Pierce Quick and major Tide target Clay Webb. Quick has become one of the team’s top recruiters. If he’s on campus and you’re a major recruit who Alabama wants, Quick will be in your ear.

“He was just telling me that a flip is going to happen,” Green said with a laugh. “He was pushing it. It’s cool that he thinks so highly of me that he wants to play with me. You know, I’m committed, but I’m still looking. I’m not locked in or anything. LSU isn’t my final school right now.”

Alabama has definitely positioned itself nicely for Green moving forward.

Hmm. Interdasting.

Top-10 DE picks up Alabama offer

Brandon Smith visited Tuscaloosa for the first time on Monday and left with an offer from the Crimson Tide.

Smith, a 2019 4-star defensive end from Louisa County High School (Mineral, Va.), spoke with Saban who gave him the verbal offer. After his first visit to Alabama, Smith can already envision himself in Tuscaloosa.

“I can definitely see myself there, but I am going to have to go back home and talk it over with my family,” Smith told SEC Country. “I went with my parents and little brother. They really think that Alabama would be a good fit for me.”

The nation’s No. 10 weakside defensive end in the 2019 class said he’ll make a commitment before his senior season, so getting Smith on campus now is important for the Tide’s chances.

He doesn’t have an official top 5 or a leader right now but Smith named Alabama, Florida State, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Penn State as schools he’s strongly considering at the moment.

Expect the Tide to be a strong contender until a decision is made.

“I can definitely see them being in it until the end because of everything they have to offer as far as academics, football and just the type of good people around the campus,” Smith said.
