Alabama and Miami WR losing steam | SEC Country
quote:

There was one point last year where it looked very likely that 4-star wide receiver Mark Pope was going to commit to Alabama. He had named the Crimson Tide his leader, and it looked like Alabama wasn’t going to relinquish its lead.

Then the coaching changes happened.

Lane Kiffin. Mario Cristobal. Steve Sarkisian. Billy Napier. Mike Locksley. Brian Daboll.

Pope’s primary recruiter at Alabama was Cristobal, but since the offensive line coach left for Oregon, the Miami Southridge High School wide receiver hasn’t heard a word from anyone in Tuscaloosa.

“I would love to hear from Alabama, but it is what it is,” Pope told SEC Country.

Miami is now Pope’s leader. The Hurricanes have all of the momentum for the nation’s No. 21 wide receiver. The Hurricanes hired Pope’s former offensive coordinator at Southridge to be an offensive analyst.

That was a big reason why Miami has seized the top spot for Pope.

“It helped them a lot because he’s someone I can trust. I would be all right with him.

“I’m loving Miami. Playing for the home city and putting on for Miami — and private education — you can’t really beat that.”

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound prospect is also strongly considering Florida, Tennessee and Utah, but it’s really Miami and everyone else at this point. Pope said he’s planning on committing in late spring. Barring a major change in his recruitment, he’ll likely pick the Hurricanes.

Wide receiver is not a major need for Alabama in the Class of 2018 because the team hit a grand slam in the Class of 2017, signing 5-star prospect Jerry Jeudy and 4-star prospects Tyrell Shavers, Henry Ruggs III and DeVonta Smith. The Tide will likely only sign two or three receivers.

Rivals.com has spent the last few weeks breaking down each position to see which school did the best on National Signing Day 2017. Today, we take a look at the programs that finished the cycle with the best hauls at linebacker.

1. ALABAMA

The class: Dylan Moses (five-star), Vandarius Cowan (four-star), Markail Benton (four-star), Chris Allen (four-star)

Analysis: The great Alabama defenses of the past decade have been led by top linebackers, players like Rolando McClain, Dont'a Hightower and C.J. Mosley. The group of linebackers headed to Tuscaloosa as part of the 2017 class will certainly re-stock the cupboard, as the Crimson Tide boast the country’s top group at the position. The headliner is five-star Dylan Moses, who bounced between running back and linebacker during his prep career but has settled in on defense. The strength of this class, though, is in the depth of talent at the position. Vandarius Cowan is a Rivals100 prospect, while Markail Benton and Chris Allen are both Rivals250 prospects.

The class of 2017 is signed and sealed, so as we look back on how programs did, we thought it would be interesting to rank the best 1-2 punches at each position. Today we take a look at the linebackers.

3. ALABAMA

Vandarius Cowan and Dylan Moses

The skinny: The Crimson Tide further strengthened their outside linebacker group by landing Moses and Cowan. Pulling Moses away from LSU was another important Alabama recruiting victory, while Cowan’s arrival from South Florida solidifies the Tide’s standing in the Dade/Broward/Palm Beach area. It’s tough for true freshmen to gain playing time in Tuscaloosa, but both will surely get a long look.

Farrell’s take: Both are physically ready to play early for Alabama. Moses could play outside or inside. Cowan has had some off-field struggles, so maturity could take time, but he has the size and skill to dominate while Moses is an athletic freak whose ceiling is high at a position he’s still learning.

TE Devin Asiasi is transferring from Michigan:

quote:

Michigan Wolverines head football coach Jim Harbaugh said Tuesday tight end Devin Asiasi will transfer, per Nick Baumgardner of MLive Media Group.

Asiasi was a freshman in 2016 and tallied just 18 receiving yards and one touchdown on two catches.

"Yeah, he's moving on, transferring," Harbaugh said, per Baumgardner. "He leaves in great status. He was doing great in school, doing great in football, really popular and well-liked by his teammates."

Asiasi was a 4-star prospect when he arrived on campus, per Scout, but the California native traveled a long way from home to join the Wolverines. Isaiah Hole of 247Sports previously cited sources saying Asiasi was seeking a transfer closer to his home on the West Coast.

Despite impressive blocking abilities that helped him see the field, Asiasi took a backseat in terms of pass-catching to established starter Jake Butt. He was lined up for a sizable increase in playing time after the latter graduated, so this is a more significant blow to the Wolverines than Asiasi's two catches as a freshman indicate.

Baumgardner noted Michigan didn't sign a tight end in its 2017 recruiting class, although it has Ian Bunting, Tyrone Wheatley Jr., Sean McKeon and Nick Eubanks on the current roster to compete for starting roles.

I wonder if we give him a call?

welcome back, bro. It was Saint's post that got you unbanned. He was civil. I requested you be unbanned in a way that was a little less apologetic and tactful.

My appeal on behalf of Trey

Let's all speculate on the penalties that Ole Miss will get.
I say at least a 2 year bowl ban and 20 scholarships.
This might cost Freeze his job and also the AD. They handled this about as bad as you could possibly handle it.

3 year bowl ban
Loss of 30 scholarships
Freeze will be fired before the season
Most of their star players transfer out
10 years before they have a winning season again

I hope the two wins over Bama were worth it.

Apparently the NCAA wanted to interview some of our players about what Ole Miss offered them and no one spoke up.

It looks like players from Auburn and Mississippi State did though.

That may come back to bit them in the arse if Ole Miss feels like they are trapped.

That surprises me. I figured Bo and Knott had talked to them. I'm glad they didn't though. If rocks start getting tossed, I don't want to be in the line of Fire

Yep. NCAA already had enough dirt. Best not to involve our guys in that mess.

Despite a sticky thread, the entire front page of the SEC Rant is filled with OM threads.

21 violations, most are level-1, some egregious -- cash payments. Staff members directly implicated. HC failure to follow NCAA regulations. Lack of institutional control. It's real bad. They gonna get hammered hard!!!!!
