If I counted correctly there are currently 45 on the posted roster. It means 5 would be redshirts (and redshirts can’t get any part of a baseball scholarship as I understand it). They upped the allowed number of players who can be on scholarship BUT didn’t increase the number of scholarships…

quote:

There will be a 40-man limit on roster size for Division I programs during the 2024 baseball season.

Up to 32 student-athletes will be allowed to receive a baseball scholarship – an increase from the normal limit of 27 in Division I.

The additional “counters” (scholarship athletes counting against the team scholarship limit) must be included in the maximum team limit of 11.7 scholarships and must be provided the minimum scholarship value of 25%.

Alabama baseball will host its annual Fan Day on Saturday, Feb. 10, at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

The free, family-friendly event will feature inflatable bounce houses and slides along with a face painter and a balloon artist on-site. Additionally, fans will be able to get an up-close look at the 2024 team by signing up for an on-field experience during the Tide's batting practice session.

The day will begin at 11 a.m. CT when check-in opens for fans who sign up to take part in the on-field experience. Those who registered will be escorted to the field at 11:30 a.m. for stretch followed by batting practice at 12 p.m. The team will then take part in an intrasquad scrimmage scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch. Free pizza will be provided at 1 p.m. for all who register in advance. Following the practice session, fans can meet the 2024 roster and get autographs from the players and staff. A free autograph card featuring the 2024 schedule will be available to all fans.

For those who have not yet secured season tickets, there will also be an opportunity to take part in the Crimson Tide's 'select a seat' event. Available seating will be tagged throughout the stadium giving fans a chance to try out potential options before purchasing.

Fans are encouraged to sign up for the free event in advance by clicking here. Any questions regarding Fan Day can be directed to Garrett Wood via e-mail at gwood@ia.ua.edu or by calling the baseball offices at (205) 348-4459.

Spring Baseball Season Set to Begin with Full-Team Practice on Friday

The Crimson Tide will start three weeks of practice leading up to the Feb. 16 season opener

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – With the start of the 2024 baseball season right around the corner, Alabama will open its spring full-team practice slate on Friday afternoon at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The Crimson Tide will put in three weeks of work leading up to the 2024 season opener on Feb. 16.

Friday's first practice will begin at 1 p.m. CT followed by an intrasquad set for a 2:30 p.m. start. The Tide will follow with a pair of practice-scrimmage splits to wrap up the weekend on Saturday and Sunday. The schedule each day features an 11:30 a.m. start to practice followed by a 1 p.m. first pitch.

Also on Saturday, the baseball team will be in attendance at the Alabama men's basketball game. The Crimson Tide will sign autographs on the main concourse from 6-6:45 p.m. Fans will have the opportunity to meet the 2024 group and pick up a free schedule card. Following the autograph session, the team will be recognized on-court and take part in a T-shirt toss midway through the first quarter.

All scrimmages are subject to change. The length will be determined on a game-to-game basis. Spaced out between scrimmages are the team's regularly scheduled practice sessions. Dates and times of all practices and scrimmages for the upcoming week can be found on RollTide.com each Monday.

Admission to Alabama baseball's on-field activity is free to the public. Gates will open each day approximately 30 minutes prior to the start of practice. Fans are asked to enter Sewell-Thomas Stadium through the main gate (Gate 3) located directly behind home plate. Once inside, fans are to stay in the lower bowl seating area with access to the upper levels of the stadium strictly prohibited.

Season for Baseball

The Tide will continue to work for the next three weeks leading up to the season opener on Feb. 16

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama baseball put together its first practice as a full team on Friday at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The day began indoors for a quick warmup before the team took part in an intrasquad scrimmage.

"The biggest attribute that these guys have outside of their talent is they are men that really like to compete," said head coach Rob Vaughn. "The one thing that I learned about them in the fall is that when you put them in a competitive environment – whether it's against each other or somebody else – they love it, and that's a good place to start.

"We've got to use these next three weeks to continue to get better, to figure some things out and keep growing. I can tell you that on February 16, we're not going to be a finished product, as no team in college baseball will be, but they have some of those intangibles that we really look for, and the DNA of these kids is pretty special."

The Crimson Tide will return to the diamond on Saturday and Sunday to close out the first weekend of practice. Both days are currently scheduled for an 11:30 a.m. CT start followed by a 1 p.m. first pitch for the scrimmage.

Updates and changes to practice times or complete cancelations due to weather can be accessed via X/Twitter (@AlabamaBSB) or on the Crimson Tide's Facebook page.

Baseball America

quote:

One Sophomore arm I'm extremely excited to watch this spring is LHP Alton Davis II (@AlabamaBSB). Had a strong Freshman season last year and pitched his way to a 5.35 ERA with 32 Ks in 33.2 IP. Was a Freshman All-SEC team selection and earned a Team USA invite.

Extremely long, lanky build at 6'5" and 185-pounds. with an especially lengthy lower-half. Ultra-projectable. Easy delivery that becomes more up-tempo once the hands break. Some natural deception and effort. Davis attacks from a high-three quarter slot with plus arm speed.

Davis' FB sits in the 93-96 range, but will top out at 97/98. Explodes out of the hand and flashes riding life through the zone. Averaged over 16.5" of vert last spring. Most effective, and gets the most swing and miss, when elevated.

Supplements his heater with a low/mid-80s SL. Does a nice job of maintaining his arm speed. Flashes sweeping action with a bit of depth. Generated a 41% miss rate last season while holding opposing hitters to a measly .132 average. Comfortably above average pitch right now, has a chance to eventually be a legit 60. Davis has advanced feel for it as well.

CH and CB are both a work-in-progress. Outstanding mound presence. Will again assume the closer role for the Crimson Tide this season, but he is line to make the jump to the weekend rotation come 2025. Top 5 round upside when he is eligible in '25.
