I don't necessarily disagree that he didn't need to call the staffs, to your analogy:
If Jennifer Lawrence was announcing whether she was marrying you or another guy, do you think she should call you before she announces it to the world?

Some schools are notorious for letting information leak when they dont get a prospect. It happened with Lorenzo Carter. The UF 247 site was reporting that Carter told coaches at Florida that he was committing to UGA. Let the kid have his moment in the sun. You win some. You lose some.

None of these kids owe these coaches anything. Head football coaches make millions of dollars every year and the kids get a scholarship.

This comes across as entitlement. Don't owe anyone anything. After all It's not like they're doing the recruit a favor.
