Grant's sin is offereing these players in the first place. If he was at VCU, maybe such players could mature in due time for a deep ncaa run. That's not feasible in a big conference.

Yeah. Brad Stevens and Butler would be fricked in a powerhouse conference like the SEC.

B/c mid major coaches never flopped before? The guy that build Gonzaga was a failure at another school (Rutgers?). Grant's predecessor at VCU is an assistant coach, now. Stan Heath, anyone? The list goes on.

Another thing that pisses me off is people making excuses saying that there's no talent in Alabama. So what? Year after year, Georgia, Mississippi, and Florida produce tons of top 150 guys. Why can't we set up camp and get a couple guys from there each year. We are located in a talent rich part of the country, yet we make every excuse in the world for why we can't get talent. It's BS.

UGA can't even get the best instate players from Georgia. The Southeast lags behind other regions in bball fundamentals.

Because Fox sucks as a recruiter and his style of play blows as well.

+ eleventy billion

I HATE that excuse. Is it easier to recruit guys in state? Sure. Does the lack of high quality in state players excuse Grant's abysmal roster management, poor player evaluations, inability to develop a big, and letting scholarships go unfilled every fricking year? frick no.

Mississippi is the only state where any Bama coaches have been able to get their foot in the door outside of Alabama, and they have been similar to Bama in the fact that outside the 2011 class they have been pretty down the past few years as well. Why haven't any Bama coaches been able to raid Florida and Georgia? I don't know, but this hasn't exactly been something that's happened strictly under Grant.

The sad fact is that Alabama has ALWAYS depended on in-state talent. ALWAYS. I don't know why. Maybe it is because some kids love being hometown heroes, but not too many kids outside of Alabama grow up thinking "I want to play for the basketball powerhouse University of Alabama".

I have many doubts about Grant being the man for the job, and right now I think we should be hiring another coach after next year, but that isn't because of his recruiting.

He's been on the top 5 for a lot I talent but he hasn't landed anyone of note outside of Alabama besides Pollard. I think his recruiting is just as questionable as his coaching.

All the excuses rolled out about Grant and the Bama program are just that, excuses.

No in-state talent? Grant is still not a good coach
Short roster? Grant is still not a good coach
Bama can't attract OOS talent? Grant is not a good coach, still.
The Coliseum is old? Grant is still not a good coach.

I've never been too very hard on Grant, only questioned certain areas and hoped for the best. I believe that coaches, especially younger ones, have the ability to grow, adjust, adapt and become much better coaches. This was always my hope for Grant, but at this point I've given up on that.

Saban is a great example of this, regularly talking about changing his philosophy and always making small
adjustments to all areas of the program.

Grant, like his predecessor, refuses to adjust or change the way he coaches the Bama team or runs the program. Unless he does change, Bama will continue to be the bubble team on good years with a 14 win and 23 win season thrown in here and there. Taking into account the SEC is bad, rolling the ball onto the court, should get you twenty wins at Bama currently.

He also landed Releford, and he's not just in the top 5 for a lot, hes been in the top 2 for a lot of top out of state talent. My point is his recruiting has shown promise, while his offense hasn't shown shite.

Can't disagree with any of that.

But my point is, what good does being in the top 5 or top 2 do if you aren't landing the guys? It does nothing for this team if you shoot for the stars and get close but ultimately miss.

I understand what your saying, and that's why I said his recruiting has shown promise. He's obviously doing something right to garner interest from a lot of these kids. Just can't seem to quite close the deal with most of them. It's not possible we will always finish 2nd with these out-of-state studs....is it?

I would say it was mostly the assistants, but all the recruits do tend to mention Grant and speak of him glowingly. Maybe he is just a lot more personable behind closed doors than he is at press conferences. Who knows. I have a feeling he isn't cheating though, which is a big reason why we keep coming in 2nd. Basketball recruits care about 1 thing and 1 thing only...do I like the head coach? Recruits love Grant, but always sign elsewhere. Could they just love the other coaches more? Sometimes, sure. But not all the time.
