I'm just so pumped about CAJ, everything he's done and said to this point just gets me pumped to see what he can do.

It's great to be a Bama bball fan again.

We could not have found a more exciting coach to lead up forward.
I think it is going to be a fun time in the life of UA bb.

I mean....if i'm being honest then hell yeah I would want Marshall. Look at what he has done at freaking Wichita State. That said I am really happy how things turned out. I love the hire for us.

Nah. I got the impression Marshall or his family didn't want to be here. CAJ wants to be here and he's excited. I'm pumped about this hire. I was at A-day with my friend who has zero interest in basketball and even she was excited when they introduced him

No, but right now it seems like a hell of a B plan. Now its his job to follow through and the fans/ universities job to give him all the support he needs.

Marshall was my first choice and it would've been a grand slam. That said, the minute it was clear that the money was the only thing that would've brought him, I started to have my doubts about him. It was obvious that if all things were equal, he would've chosen Wichita State. We would've been dragging Marshall to UA. When you do something like that, it isn't a recipe for success.

Ideally, I would take Marshall over CAJ if that meant Marshall had jumped on Battle's plane on that Monday afternoon....but that didn't happen and now we have a coach who wants to be here.

Very happy we didn't get Marshall. Never thought much of him though he has had good success at WSU. Need a dynamic leader to lead our sports teams he does not fit the image for me. Extremely happy with Avery; will be shocked if he fails at Alabama.

I think we did the best we could do. Marshall was the homerun and most of us knew we wouldn't land him.

I think that just like when we missed on Rich Rod, most fans felt a let down because we were convinced he would take us to the next level when all the while there was a better option out there.

I hope, as with football that the initial letdown will turn into unforeseen success on the basketball court. This guy just has that "it" factor. He may not win 10 games a year but it'll at least be fun for a change.

Either one of them could have been boom or bust at Alabama. The only difference with Marshall is we would have been pretty sure that the team wouldn't have been BAD. But, there was nothing to guarantee he would have been great either. I probably would have been more confident with Marshall, but I'm very excited about CAJ. I think he has the potential to do very well. If nothing else, he's promoting the program which was something sorely lacking in the past 15 years. Of course, he could fall on his face once the games start. But, I'm optimistic.

That's how I feel as well. Marshall was/is a proven commodity. He has had success in the college game and already had a system he would've been able to install at UA. There would be no learning curve. Now he easily could've been a bad fit and/or crumbled under the pressure of coaching at a bigtime school. We see rising stars in the coaching profession burn out all the time.

I'm excited about CAJ because he does bring an energy that the program really needed, but this is also his first time coaching in the college game. I'm optimistic and believe he does have potential...but he's its not a sure thing.

Avery's got two big things going for him right now. His personality and the unknown. He will always have his personality, so thats huge. The unknown begins to fade away as the season goes on. Hopefully the known will begin to outweigh the unknown as a plus as the season goes on.

Frick Marshall. Hope we play them in the first round of the NCAA tourney next year.

If he doesn't win at least 10 games a year, it definitely won't be fun.

If the organizers of the tournament in Orlando we're playing in have a sense of humor, Wichita will be our opening round opponent.

As for this thread, I hate that we missed on Marshall because he's a proven commodity at this level. But we didn't know if he could recruit the needed talent to Bama. Johnson has both a big enough reputation and personality to hopefully draw in top talent to Bama so hopefully it works out for us in the end. Plus, Johnson doesn't come across as a huge douche like Marshall.

I might be crazy but I'm NOT AT ALL UPSET that we didn't land Marshall.... As others have stated, he didn't seem to really want to be at Alabama. CAJ REALLY wants to be here. He's a proven NBA coach with a LOT of charisma... After Grant, Bama BB has no where to go but UP!! I'm willing to wager that within the next 2-3 years, Bama basketball will be making some noise in the NCAA tournament... RTR

I'm too dumb when it comes to basketball to know 1 way or the other. I'll never really understand the game beyond the basic rules.

I was never excited about Marshall, except that everyone else was excited and wanted him, so I figure they know better than I did.

But hell, we almost beat him this year. And I always liked looking towards the NBA for a coach similar to that of CAJ.

I don't understand why looking for guy who improves little school is considered better than a former NBA coach - even if the NBA coach isn't named Phil Jackson or Pat Riley.

They have such small rosters, so it's not like a coach taking Troy to the National Championship in football. Get lucky on a few recruits, and next thing you know you find yourself with some success that may or may not happen again.

Not saying that is what Marshall was about, just kind of saying maybe that's what we just had.

Meanwhile, the other guy has coached at the highest level of the game.

So I really don't even know why the coaching search went that direction to start with.

In the end, I'll just be grateful if we don't have extremely long scoring droughts anymore and show some signs of life on offense.

The main thing is, the rules between college and nba are much different than NCAA and the nfl. So there are strategic differences between the different levels. So I'm not surprised people are using they lack of college experience as troll bait.

Marshall would've have been a home hire. But a Avery might be like a double with the bases loaded, it might actually be a better thing. There are so many things I love about hiring Avery.

- Personality: this one is obvious. But would you expect anything less from a Nola sports legend? They have done silver tongues down there.

- Playing career/style: Were aren't talking about a hall of fame player, someone whose physical gifts allowed them to dominate. Avery was a short, quick little PG, with a very high basketball iq. And the PGs are the best leaders. They have to score and distribute (figuring out how to get the team's stars the ball, while in a position to succeed).

- NBA coaching experience: The NBA is as fickle of a league when it comes to coaching hires. One down year, and you're on the hot seat. He also had little to no say over the roster. But he's won a NBA coach of the year.

- Espn: Top high school recruits don't watch much college ball, just NBA. High school kids probably know more about Avery then people in their a 20s to mid 30s. The record know this guy, and probably have respected his opinion and knowledge for a couple of years.

- Voice: That awesome fricking voice...
