No. 7 Alabama Becomes First Team to Hit 198 Against Top-Ranked Oklahoma

The Crimson Tide rolled to a 198.025 road score to become the first opponent this season to hit the 198 threshold against the No. 1 Sooners

NORMAN, Okla – The No. 7 Alabama gymnastics program rolled to a 198.025 team score – the highest road score for the Crimson Tide this season – to become top-ranked Oklahoma's (24-0, 4-0 Big 12) first opponent this season to reach 198. Despite that, the Crimson Tide fell to the Sooners 198.775 to 198.025.

The Tide (12-4-1; 3-3-1 SEC) got off to an early lead thanks to UA's uneven bars lineup as half of the Tide's lineup posted a 9.925 or higher. In the No. 5 spot, senior Cameron Machado's 9.925 score became her eighth 9.900-or-higher mark of the season with Luisa Blanco tying her career-high of 9.975 as anchor for a share of the event title.

Over on vault, three UA gymnasts performed to a 9.900-or-higher score on back-to-back events, highlighted by Corinne Bunagan's season-high 9.925 as the junior performed her way to a share of the event title. Blanco picked up her second-consecutive 9.9-plus score of the day, as Lilly Hudson recorded the Tide's third 9.900 on the event. Blanco and Hudson would finish each with a podium finish on the Tide's second event of the afternoon.

On the Tide's third event of the night, freshman Jamison Sears highlighted floor exercise with a career-high 9.925 on the apparatus. Blanco made it three-for-three, securing yet another 9.900 as sophomore Gabby Gladieux hit a 9.925 – her fourth 9.925-or-higher score of the season on floor. Burgess became the fourth UA gymnast to reach the 9.900 threshold as the Tide earned its second-highest road score on the apparatus at 49.525.

The Crimson Tide would record a season-high 49.625 on the balance beam as five UA gymnasts hit 9.900-or-higher scores, highlighted by a 9.975 performance from Blanco as the Dallas, Texas, native collected a second-place finish in the all-around via a 39.750 showing.

Three UA gymnasts captured six podium finishes en route to the team's 198.025 score.

HEAD COACH ASHLEY JOHNSTON SAID
"I'm really proud of how this group is connected and committed to the details. Today was a great reflection of that – they took what they learned over the course of the last year and really put it into play today, where there was a lot of really great moments. There were still a few missteps along the way, but they never let that faze them and they continued to respond, turn after turn, person after person. Everybody, from the lineup to the sideline, and whoever was cheering on this team – this was a great team effort and you could really feel the collective commitment to the mission out there on the floor tonight."

great score but OU got just under 198.8. Unreal score. You are going to need mid 198's to win the natty this year. If Bama could get into that final 3 or 4 it would be a great year.

The No. 7 Alabama gymnastics team will compete in the second session at the 2024 Southeastern Conference Championships Saturday night in Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, La. Both sessions of the meet will be broadcast live on SEC Network, with the evening session beginning at 7 p.m. CT.

The conference championship meet is divided into two sessions, with the top four teams competing in the evening session while the other four squads square off in the afternoon session. All eight of the league's programs are ranked in the nation's top 20, with all four teams in the Crimson Tide's session ranked inside the top 10. Along with Alabama, the night session includes No. 3 LSU, No. 4 Florida and No. 6 Kentucky, while No. 12 Arkansas, No. 13 Missouri, No. 14 Auburn and No. 18 Georgia will compete in the afternoon session at 2:30 p.m. CT.

The Crimson Tide won the SEC Championship title in 2021 and finished as the runner-up in both 2022 and 2023. UA's roster features four individual SEC champions, with Luisa Blanco (all-around, vault, uneven bars and balance beam), Makarri Doggette (uneven bars) and Shania Adams (uneven bars) all winning event titles at the 2021 contest, while Gabby Gladieux earned a share of the vault title, as a freshman, at the 2023 contest.

Alabama (12-4-1, 3-3-1 SEC) will start out the competition on the floor exercise, rotating to vault and the uneven bars before closing out the night on the balance beam. Top-seeded LSU will start on vault, Florida will start on the balance beam and Kentucky will start on the uneven bars.

Let’s start with the good news from yesterday. Congrats to the ladies on a great start to the post season. The judges weren’t doling out 10s like candy, which I can appreciate. Solid performance to come in second. NCAA Championship selection is tomorrow.

No. 7 Alabama Finishes Second at 2024 SEC Championships

For the 25th consecutive year, the Crimson Tide finished in the top three of the conference championship meet, with 21 of those being a top-two finish

The No. 7 Alabama gymnastics program finished in second place at the 2024 Southeastern Conference Championships with a score of 197.750 to secure a top-three finish at the conference meet for the 25th straight year, while recording a top-two finish for the 21st time during that span. With the result Saturday night, the Crimson Tide is still the only program in the league to never finish outside the top four.

The Tide started the night on the floor exercise and used four straight scores of 9.900 to capture a share of first place (49.475) through the opening rotation. The event was highlighted by Gabby Gladieux's sixth-straight score of a 9.9-or-higher as Lilly Hudson posted her eighth 9.9-or-higher mark of the season on the floor exercise. Before Luisa Blanco recorded her third consecutive 9.9-or-higher score on the apparatus, Jamison Sears made her SEC Championships debut with a score of 9.9 – her second on the event in as many meets.

On Alabama's second rotation, Corinne Bunagan and Blanco each hit a 9.9 on vault – Bunagan's second straight on the apparatus and the fourth meet in a row for Blanco – as the Tide maintained its top-two place in the team standings. In her conference championship debut, Chloe LaCoursiere posted a career-high-tying 9.925 as leadoff on the uneven bars. Blanco bookended the rotation with a mirroring 9.925, but despite the two scores, the Tide found itself back in third place heading into the final event of the night.

In the final rotation, Alabama calmly rolled to a 49.550 on the balance beam – its second-highest score on the apparatus this season – as four UA gymnasts recorded four scores of 9.9 or higher, highlighted by a season-high 9.925 from Shania Adams and a 9.950 from Blanco as anchor.

The Crimson Tide came into the championship as the No. 4 seed in the conference and No. 7 nationally, defeating No. 6 Kentucky (197.600), No. 4 Florida (197.300), No. 13 Missouri (197.275), No. 12 Arkansas (197.050), No. 14 Auburn (196.775) and No. 18 Georgia (196.075). The No. 2 LSU Tigers took home the title with a 198.075.

Head Coach Ashley Johnston Said
"I am so incredibly proud of our team tonight. [Prior to the meet], we talked as a group about keeping our mission greater than the distractions; it would have been easy to get off track tonight with the noise and how energetic the arena was, but I am just really proud of our group for staying locked in and for staying connected with each other. We beat two teams that were ranked ahead of us coming into tonight and I'm just really proud of the effort all together – from the six people that were up on each event, to our sideline of supporters and to our Alabama fans in the stands. This really was a collective effort and a great confidence-builder as we head into the regional championships."

Two Alabama gymnasts earned Southeastern Conference accolades following last weekend's SEC Championships, the league office announced Wednesday.

Luisa Blanco was named to the All-SEC team for the fourth consecutive year, earning four scores of 9.9-or-higher at the conference championships. The super senior finished in second place in the all-around with a 39.675 and second place on both the uneven bars (9.925) and the balance beam (9.950).

Chloe LaCoursiere was named to both the All-SEC and All-Freshman teams, joining Blanco in second place on the uneven bars with a mirroring 9.925 in her first-ever conference championship meet.

The Crimson Tide finished in second place as a team at the championships with a team total of 197.750. The feat marked the 21st time in the last 25 years that Alabama finished inside the top two as the Tide remains the only school in the SEC to never finish outside the top four at the SEC Championships.

Alabama will continue its season at the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional Championships on April 4-6.
