Pathetic. Don't give a shite if we open with a power five top 10 team if it means the OOC home schedule is full of lower tier cupcakes.
We deserve to be made fun of.

Was Sewanee busy that weekend?

Huntington is probably looking for a pay day. Let's schedule them too.

This is ridiculous. Could've scheduled at least someone that fans know has a team. I didn't even know mercer played football.

They didn't until about 3 years ago

I live 'bout 20 minutes from their campus...while they're passionate 'bout their football around here and this will definitely help their program financially, this could get real ugly, particularly the 2017 game...while they can hang in the basketball arena, they've only been playing football for 3 seasons...and I believe their first team was made up of all freshmen...

Alabama is 2-0 against Mercer after winning 20-0 in both 1939 and 1940. The Bears dropped football in 1941 before resuming play in 2013.

I can see if my local HS team wants to play.

Why not play UAB?

Two thoughts:
1) IMO, folks need to just get over it. This isn't the NFL. You're going to ALWAYS have a couple of cupcakes every season. As only as you play in a competitive conference and have a couple of good OOC games, I not only have no problem with scheduling them, I think they SHOULD be scheduled. But for these games, young players wouldn't get real game experience and walk ons who put a lot into the program would never play at all.
2) Those Mercer guys are smart. Look at the Bama helmet. They know the outcome of 2016 season's already been decided.

Actually, other than this game, our 2017 OOC opponents are pretty respectable, at least on paper...Florida State, Fresno State, and Colorado State...could be the strongest OOC regular season schedule we've had in years...

That is actually a really strong OOC schedule Knowing that, I have no problem with playing a team like Mercer.

Fresno State is one of the 15 worst teams in Divsion 1 right now, Colorado State fell back to the middle of the pack in the MWC last season as well. Florida State is great, obviously.
None of those non-Fla St teams are as good as MTSU was this year IMHO.

Still no excuse for scheduling a FCS or lower team. And no, you don't HAVE to keep scheduling these games, but the will keep doing it as long as people don't express their feelings about it.

I'm more upset that Penn State was the last big name OOC team to play at Bryant-Denny. That was six years ago. I know we like having our big non conference games at Jerry's World or Atlanta, but the fans are being punished when we go with a team like Mercer over a true power.
