I prefer downtown. It's mostly free(except for the private lots) and it's really not that far of a walk. About a mile. There are a couple of companies that have golf carts that will give you a ride for free(though they accept tips) as well. Buses run for $1 per person as another option.
It's pretty painless getting out of town after the game from downtown as well, relatively speaking.

Downtown parking deck. Never had any issues finding a spot.

Go to the mall. Parking is free, but they bus you to the stadium for $10 a piece. Drops you off at the southeast corner. Best parking deal in the city outside of the downtown parking deck. Except the deck is really small and fills up fast.

Go downtown. About a 20 minute walk or so. Is your son old enough to make a quick walk? This is a great game for him to spend time with dad. Have a blast man.

I probably shouldn't do this...
Check this link:

Coming from downtown, turn left on Queen City Avenue at the University Club. Go down one block to 4th Street and turn left and start looking for parking on the street. Go all the way down 4th, turn right if necessary, then turn right on 3rd Street if necessary and head back toward Queen City Ave. If you plan to arrive around three to three and a half hours before kickoff, I would expect that you will be able to park on the street and not pay. You'll be exactly one mile from the stadium...easy walk. I would be highly surprised if you don't find a spot on 4th Street, 20th Avenue, or 3rd Street.
But I can't stress this enough...do NOT park on a yellow curb. You'll get towed. If it's not a yellow curb, you can park on the street. And on 3rd street, you can park on the grass strip by the street opposite the houses.

And if he's old enough to handle a really long day, get there in time for Game Day.

I park at Central High school and leaving is a breeze if you avoid going to McFarland

I always park on the corner of 15th street and 12th Ave. If spots on the grass by 15th are open it's free. Otherwise go under the overpass down 12th and you can pick a yard for $20-40. Easy walk to stadium, strip, etc. I've done this with kids and a very pregnant wife
And then when you leave you are right next to the interstate. Take a right on 15th and it's like half a mile to 359
