I would buy that if a bunch of people didn't witness Coker sucking it up last Saturday...

The same way any reporter claims to know anything, sources.

He's not denying that Coker is struggling at the moment

Also, if Coker's issue is a lack of familiarity, are we holding him back by making him split reps? There are a ton of variables facing the QB position that I'm probably over thinking....
Certainly possible. If the problem is lack of timing with receivers and lack of understanding of playbook, then he should be putting in extra work outside of practice to help correct these. I can't imagine guys like Cooper, White, and C. Jones would really object to spending an extra half hour after practice to work on this. We of course don't know that he isn't already doing this.

Yeah, but why would Saban leak this info when he is not known for doing such a thing?

I believe it to be honest. Coker may not be burning it up out there but neither is BS and if he was the QB race would be over. I think the staff wants Coker but are not willing to give it to him and do not want it to be the focus of our fall camp. The media is looking for a story with UA on anything. I see it getting played out during the 1st few games that Coker will over take Sims. I think his ceiling is higher and will finish the season as the starter.

You have to remember, a bunch of people witnessed him looking great all week in practice too. Great practices, then one bad practice.

A lot of people close to the program seem to think that Coker will eventually be the guy.

Question. Doesn't Florida St. and Bama run basically the same offense? I know Jimbo was the OC under Saban for a while and aren't the offenses Saban ran at LSU about the same they run at Bama now? If so, I don't know why there would be a big learning curve for Coker. And with the new OC in Kiffin, I guessing Sims if having to learn new stuff too.

Do you think it may have something do to do with not taking first team snaps in practice? A big part of being a confident QB is having command of the players you are leading. As he's been with the first team all through spring and fall camp, I think he'll look much more natural back there.

That's likely. I'm looking forward to seeing Sims in the WVU game more than any other part of the team. If he's made his improvements, I'm ready to see what he can do. I think it's fair to say he's one of almost everyone's favorites.

I disagree. In fact, many, many people seemed convinced as of a few weeks ago that Coker was going to run away with the competition and start against WVU

Yep, and that doesn't change what I said. Fans may have doubted it, but I'm 100% sure that Saban didn't. His plan all along has been to play both against WVU no matter what, and Sims was always going to be on the field first out of respect and seniority alone.

quote:

Now that that's looking less and less likely, I think it does BS a disservice to now say Coker never had an opportunity to win the job in camp

He did. But he still wouldn't have started the opener because that's not how Saban does things.

quote:

because CNS wants to reward BS for his service. CNS just isn't that charitable

He's constantly played lesser players because of seniority in his time here. He is.

If Coker was clearly better, then he would start.

Yeah, maybe around SEC time. But there is no way Saban makes Sims come off the bench in the opener. First of all, he likes him. We all like him. The team likes him. If Saban thought Coker was the guy, he has to let the team see that in game action. Starting Sims doesn't mean Coker won't play just as much. IF Coker is even the better option, it'll show then and Saban won't have to force the decision on the team, they'll see it is the right thing to do.

But Coker may not even be a better option than Sims. He's definitely more talented, but he may not be the guy who best gives Bama the chance to win a title this year.

Not exactly. They have a lot of similarities, but they also have a lot of differences. That said, it shouldn't be too hard for Coker to grasp the pb.

why not? Saban has started JUCO guys in the opener before. Never at QB, but we've never had a JUCO QB push for PT.

LINK

-- WR Amari Cooper didn't appeared to be slowed at all. Guess two days was all he needed to recover from his bruised knee.

-- Same goes for freshman LB Shaun Dion Hamilton, who played through an ankle injury at Saturday's scrimmage.

-- DL A'Shawn Robinson (knee) and OL Dominick Jackson (ankle) are still at least a day away from returning to practice. Alabama coach Nick Saban projected Wednesday for Robinson's return date while Jackson's status is a bit murkier, though he's anticipated to increase his workload in some capacity this week.

-- DB Geno Smith (knee) was moving around fine and fully participating. He did not scrimmage Saturday. When the team worked on nickel defense, both he and Maurice Smith lined up at Star.

-- Trey DePriest and Reggie Ragland were working as the linebackers with the first-team nickel. This is one of the first times all camp we've seen DePriest, who is recovering from a knee injury, do anything first-team related.

-- Jarran Reed and Brandon Ivory continued to line up in the back for defensive line drills. The first group featured Jonathan Allen and D.J. Pettway at the ends and Darren Lake at nose.

-- TE Brian Vogler (ankle) and LB Denzel Devall (leg) also didn't appear to be slowed.

-- Saw a bunch of different drills than we typically do. Among them were tight ends and wide receivers having ball security tested by running through gauntlets, running backs hitting the blocking sled and quarterbacks catching passes.

-- Alabama wore helmets, shoulder pads and shorts.

What's next?

Saban and select players will meet with reporters after practice. Alabama meets at the same time Wednesday for the first official practice of the school year.

I get that, but I'm just saying that Saban isn't trying to downplay Coker.

this is more along the line of what we had anticipated. although I cant help but wonder why Dillon Lee isnt on Nickel? any ideas?

Kinda glad to see Lake get back ahead of Kirven. KK has more of a DE body now at 6'5 300. Lake needs to let his balls drop and start throwing folks around.

Pettway and Allen are straight up bookends. not sure how much they will be on the field together or if Tomlinson and Robinson will be their counterparts. But 57 & 93 are going to be battling each other every game for TFLs and sacks on the scorecard.

Not sure. Maybe he'd be in Nickel if it was an obvious passing down.

I think we may start Robinson at Nose. With Ivory having to earn his spot back, I'm not sure he'll get it. And Robinson gives you a more athletic option from the Nose, and someone who can go from holding their ground against the run to rushing the passer in an instant.

Sims has a bit of the Cade Foster problem, to a lesser extent. I think most people like him and want him to be successful, but he just has made people uncomfortable with what we've seen from him.

Again, Sims has not nearly failed like Foster, and I hope he has improved greatly and can lead our team for us.
