Will you fill me in on the protests that are taking place across Mexico ? These students that have been missing for several weeks are probably never going to be seen alive again ... Do you live near Guerrero ? Remains have been pulled from the San Juan River but several thousand people go missing in Mexico every year so obviously the remains could belong to anyone... What are you hearing ? TIA

Good afternoon from here.

I've been telling my students for a few years that there is a definite chance that there will be a massive revolution in the next decade and to prepare for it.

Right now I think we're seeing the pinpricks before it happens -- state sponsored murder of 47~ students and the investigation has been an absolute joke. The president falsely described the town as a state (when even I knew it was in Guerrero).

They've unmasked several mass graves -- and Guerrero has been a trouble point for a while. I live "close" as in I could get there in a few hours by car no problem, but I tend to stay away from that side of the country.

I have no idea if they'll ever unearth the remains and ironically the government has suddenly produced confessions of "Mexican cartel members" -- no one is buying it.

They had a huge march here in Mexico City yesterday and I have no idea how many people went, but it was unbelievably large and they ended up burning an effigy of Enrique Pena Nieto (the president of Mexico).

Oh, I have no clue as far as that's concerned.

ETA: Probably whatever the US tells them to be.

I don't know, it probably won't be safe, though.

A movement toward stratocracy? Communism/Socialism? Fractured government? It's just going to happen, there is 0 trust in the government, and not like Americans think.

We are probably inching toward war or martial law, depending on how the protests turn out.

EDIT: It sounds extreme, but I don't know how to describe it. You can just feel it, how people are behaving, everyone is on edge in Mexico City, and the protests are getting bigger and bigger.

I would make a pretty good dictator at that, but I'm sure I'll end up somewhere in the new government if it does happen.

Is there any unifying ideology other than burn the corrupt government to the ground?

I don't see it, I just see total, unrelenting anger from every angle. I've been staying away from downtown for the past week, and will probably continue to do so until I see how this plays out.

The last time protests were like this, the Tlatelolco Massacre happened.

I don't blame you on that front. This sort of thing can and will turn ugly fast. Stay safe.

Wouldn't surprise me to see something like that happen again with the climate you're describing. What happens next if something like that happens? There's a pattern of revolt/protests, followed by brutal suppression by those in power, and a revolution to follow. Typically holds true for dictator type governments, but that seems to be the trajectory of this. The anger over the government mass murdering it's own people isn't going to be eased by the government again mass murdering it's people.

Here's where I suspect it could get really dirty. Say you do have a revolution type event and you get a power vacuum once the first goal of overthrowing the sitting government is met. More troubling is the power the cartels have in their respective regions. I'm not nearly well versed in Mexico and Mexican politics to even speculate on how that would play out or the different factions that would be in play.

It sounds like Mexicans are ready to blow the corrupt system up. What scares me is what comes next.

There always seems to be some type of civil unrest going on in certain areas of Mexico but from what I'm reading this just seems different... Like you said , the early stages of a revolution.

I actually see something like this happening but the fact is: It doesn't even need to be a massacre. Just a couple of cops beat up on a couple of protesters and it sort of just spirals out of control from there.

I see a definite "eat the rich" mentality here from common people, but I also see those who are using the protests to quietly collect power. This is sort of analogous to the "self defense organizations" in Michoacan -- which have been, basically, a bunch of dudes with guns who took over towns for "protection" and who basically dominate them.

Everything right now is fricking chaotic, but we will probably start seeing an increased military presence in Mexico City very soon if the protests keep getting that large.

It's worse, too, because several states have already declared that they want independence from the State of Mexico (Yucatan being one of them), I can't imagine what'll happen if central gets cut off or if those states seek sovereignty through unconventional channels.

shite is getting fricked up here.

You can fricking feel it man.

In the air, I don't believe in auras but sometimes when I'm walking down the street my hair stands on end, people just seem a lot more erratic but in a really quiet way.

Kind of like a hive mind where one gets scared and it just sort of travels to the rest of the colony.
