teen charged with careless operation A really tragic story, A texas family heading to disney world involved in single car crash which kills 5 including both parents.

The whole story is pretty tragic. First, I don't think its a good decision to allow a young driver to drive at night on a long road trip. I also feel horrible for the teen that fell asleep while driving and now 3 of his sibling and his parents are gone. Then to top it off La State Police are going to shake him down for 300 or so dollars over a standard ticket. Then lastly the news headline is a bit silly, when someone reads charged over a accident they automatically think it is something more than a typical ticket. IMO the state should show some compassion instead of trying to rip 300 and whatever dollars off this kid. I know it is standard procedure but maybe in special circumstances we should use some common sense. What good does fining this kid do in this situation?

its on the regular OT as well and of course some people are actually defending the LSP actions.

This story of the ticket is another story of what is wrong with our judicial system/ police state. I don't believe we need to make emotional decisions but we also shouldn't use blanket ideas to handle every situation. The wreck was careless but considering the extreme circumstances I don't think a ticket needed to be tacked on.

How many would have died in that wreck had they all been wearing their seat belts? My guess is zero.

Thetis has me really choked up, that 16 year old will never heal from this. I can't imagine the grief and guilt he will carry. So young to have such a heavy burden for the rest of his life. I cannot believe some still choose to not wear and make their kids wear seatbelts. That Tahoe held up well and they would probably all be alive if not thrown from the truck.

hard to really know how many would have survived. Its really tragic, I saw the story a few days ago but like I do i scrolled over it. I finally read it and was pretty shocked by it. The kid shouldn't have been driving, the parents should have had everyone buckled up. I would guess they were unbuckled to sleep.

I had a friend that was killed in a car accident. Him and one other kid were wearing their seatbelts and died. Two others were in the car with no seatbelt on and were thrown out of the car and lived.

I'm sorry for your loss, but your friends are, by far, the exception and not the rule.

Common sense and government? This does not compute.

All kidding aside, I completely agree with the OP.

Yep.

Here's the vehicle:

There's no intrusion of any kind in the passenger area. It isn't even damaged that badly.

Properly restrained, it is a near 100% certainty they all survive with little injury.

That's the tragedy here - not that the LSP is being dicks (and they're being massive dicks) and giving the kid a ticket.

I flipped a car once (landing upside down) and was not wearing my seat belt. The driver's side was crushed but I landed in the undamaged passenger side. That is the only reason I survived. The officer who arrived on the scene could tell there was no way I wore my seat belt and walked away from the accident but it was clear that saved my life so he checked off the box for "yes" next to the seat belt line on his report.

These wrecks where families are devastated are so heartbreaking and gut wrenching.

One of my college roommates and his three kids were killed in a wreck in Houston (drunk 18 wheeler driver tipped his truck over on their vehicle). His wife watched them as they died. It was a terrible experience from start to finish (those little coffins). Almost every EMT, firefighter and police officer attended the funeral or visitation.

I don't wish this on anyone.

Seat belts save lives.

This has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt and parroting exception stories, no matter how personal, only serves to promote ignorance or wrong thinking and put people's lives at greater risk than they have to be.

This is correct. There are lots of safety rules that, in exceptional and rare circumstances, can increase risk of death or injury, but, in the vast majority of cases, decrease those risks.

Absolutely. I always wear mine and have since learning to drive. I don't appreciate mandatory seatbelt laws however. Should be the choice of the individual. If we do have seatbelt laws they should be for children under 16.

Just wear the damn things. Make it routine and you'll never notice.
