Trading cards makes it too easy. Unless I have the Ace or King of spades, I'll go nil if I think I can catch only one or two, and I usually get it.

exactly. as long as i don't have an ace or joker in my hand I can get nil on pretty much any hand. Just about.

hard is taking a hand with 1 book and 4 possibles and figuring out how the board is going to play out

Yep. I make that decision based on how many I have of each of the other suits.

Easy to go Nil with King of Spades

Only saw 1 person do it successfully with the Ace and he was my partner at the time.

Not if it's solo.

And the way I always played, the Ace trumped all, so it was impossible to go nil.

Ahh spades and dominoes. Makes me miss my best buddy's family. I'd walk across the country to spend holidays with them before I'd walk downstairs for thanksgiving or Christmas with my own hillbilly family.

My best skill at Spades is figuring out how people play and having a really good idea on what people are holding as the game progresses.

I don't play in such a way that you can go nil with the ace of spades.

Explain this one to me.

We actually flip back in forth. One version you can call nil and swap one card with your partner and the other version you can call misdeal if you receive no spades.

This usually works out for a nil scenario.

I used to play a lot. It's a lot of fun.

I also like Bridge. It's like Spades but you'd better really like and trust your partner. I've been in many a match where partners yell at each other.

It does. That's why we declare at the beginning nill or mosdeal game.

Used to play a lot. Also pinochle and rook. Fun tip.. when playing rook, wear something multicolored.. red, green, yellow and black. Nothing like the fun you have when you're playing with another couple and it's guys vs girls and they can't figure out how you always win.

Depending on house rules and if you have min bets, say 3 or 4 tricks min per partnership. Game we were playing at the time had no limit. I had 1 off suit ace and one rag that would probably pick up a second trick. On some house rules you can mini slam 12 for 150 or full slam for 200. They were so worried about me setting their mini my partner dropped the Ace on their off suit Ace and they picked up the trick. I still picked up my 2 so we set them, but they had already accepted the trumped trick as theirs so it passed.

My old partner stills laughs about it every now and again when I see him.

Never underestimate the power of your opponents greed to ignore the obvious!

Played with the same rule, but generally if you have no spades, Nil is almost assured as by simple math you are long a suit they can not lead to wreck your Nil and with no trump to start, you can not get stuck with trump at the end. Again, bridge helps as going Nil with 4 and possibly 5 spades is not always as hard as it appears.

Did you go to UK?

They have produced some really solid players from the 1950's on and some made more at Bridge than the local poker games.

Yes, undergrad. I used to play tournament Bridge when I lived in New England. It's almost required if you have a lot of Jews in your circle of friends up there. They're so much fun to play with but even more enjoyable to watch. You'd swear some couples are going to kill each other unless you know then personally. It's just how they roll.

Used to play a ton with buddies when I was single. Grew up in a Rook family, but Rook is all about getting the right cards. With Spades you can do more with a bad scoring hand.

That's actually why I like Spades -- it does depend on the cards but there's at least some semblance of balance when they just don't go your way. I could pass hours and hours playing the game, and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one.

I know I'm late on this topic but I used to play Spades a lot. My mom taught me. Me and my sister almost beat a tournament champion team at a family gathering when we were like 9. Played (and won) in games with friends in college. I'm not the greatest ever but I can hold my own

My partner is usually my aunt( dad's sister). I'm an aggressive guy while playing and she keeps me "reined in".

We usually play double joker then ace, or double joker deuce ace (don't ask me why).

Don't get to play much now since I'm alone. Next opportunity will probably be at the family reunion next summer.

Also TBIRD, how have you not played Spades before as an AA male? What do you do a reunions? Bean toss?
