“Mike Bobo’s crayon box has many colors in it.”....(h/t to the Senator)....

quote:

Mason didn’t want to get too specific about the adjustments that the coaches made as the game got deep into the third quarter, but he said offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and line coach Will Friend noticed something Clemson was doing to thwart the Bulldogs’ power game and they adjusted Georgia’s blocking schemes to take advantage of it.

“Those plays were toss sweeps, but systematically they weren’t schemed up like we planned,” Mason said after Georgia’s 45-21 win Saturday night. “Coach Bobo and Coach Friend did a phenomenal job over there of seeing it and they said, ‘hey, this is what we’re going to do: We’re going to change (the blocking scheme) and declare here.’ And we gashed them. For those guys to see that over on the sideline and change that up real quick is something people don’t see and they don’t get enough credit for it.”

Georgia had scoring runs of 18 (Gurley), 47 (Nick Chubb) and 51 yards (Gurley) on toss sweeps to the right side in the fourth quarter. In each case, the Bulldogs were pulling center David Andrews into the running lane and getting fullback Taylor Maxey downfield to block the Tigers’ safety.
“We kind of figured out how they were playing it a little different and we said ‘let’s declare here compared to where we were doing, let’s put another guy on

I did notice that it seemed like Friend was standing unusually far downfield at one point during the second half. Maybe that's what he was looking at.

I was cursing Bobo at the half. At the end he looked like an offensive guru.

I've just been extremely impressed with the gameplan and adjustments made by the coaching staff. So many people who infuriated with Bobo for not running Gurley more in the first half. Looks like that was by design. Having him fresh in the second half was crucial and it showed. Especially since he seemed to be gassed in the latter half of games last season.

I thought he seemed gassed because he was out of shape following his return from his injury. When he went out the gate last year against UF on that 65 yard pass reception I thought he was going to have the big one like Fred Sanford.

Gotta love Mason's quote also...
quote:

“I don’t care if I throw for one yard and we win,” said Mason, who backed up Aaron Murray for the previous four years. “If you wait around for this one year and you’ve got one shot at this, records aren’t on your mind. Just winning a championship and dancing in the glitter is"… "We played good enough to win and we won, so I’m happy.”

Likewise and I'm sure they have analysts up in the press-box/whatever sharing a bird's-eye view of Clemson's defensive alignment on the plays in question. But in the end much of the running game boils down to making key blocks and on defense defeating those blocks.

Basically sums up every season with Bobo as OC.

On that note....has there been any official explanation of why Gurley only got what...4 touches behind the QB in the first half?

Was this designed to keep him uber fresh for the second half or just a unforeseen product of the back rotation and timing of possessions? Were they trying to work him in slowly?

I'll admit I was like everyone else in America at half going..."give Gurley the damn ball!"

I don't buy that Bobo would saving Gurley for the second half.

IMHO You take your best players and you use them from the start. There is no way Bobo knew Gurley would be that effective in the second half. You shouldn’t hold back your talent EVER. With all the weird shite that could happen in a game you need to give your best effort the entire time(unless you have a 30 point lead). If you bust open a 14 or 21 point lead in the first quarter I would understand resting your stud player for a series or two in order to ensure they’re fresh.

There is no logical excuse for Gurley only having 4 carries in the first half. With that said I'm not smart and Bobo is a genius.

This combined with us not really having the ball much in the second quarter. Gurley said in a post game interview that this was the plan. They wanted to make sure that he was fresh in the 4th.

I was thinking it but I've honestly gotten to the point where I trust Bobo's gameplan.

As long as its part of a plan and not an oversight I'm with you....my opinion of Bobo has come a long way since early last season.

Also, as I noted before the fact that we scored 21 in the 4th qtr with zero pass attempts tells me alot about his patience in sticking with what's working.

It's nothin' but a big hugfest after a great win!!!

IIRC In the post game radio Gurley said he was asking for the ball in the locker room at half time.

They were saying on the Seth and Gentry show that he knew this was the plan going in. He mentioned as such, post game. I would hope that he was begging for the ball too.

Another thing I noticed when I re watched the game, is how many designed short throws Mason had in the 1st half. I would say that over a 1/4 of his throws were designed short passes. I this was designed to make the defense tire out.

If you throw a quick screen to the wr, then the LB's and Dline gotta run way over there to get the wr. Also Gurley said the gameplan was to keep him fresh going into the 4th quarter. So these quick hitting wr screens seemed to tire out the D without tiring out our RB's, since we hardly ran the ball in the 1st half.

Then we all know what happened to their D in the 2nd half, when they were worn down and our RB's were fresh.
