I hope she wants to continue her education after graduation and teach... Otherwise, that degree and 75 cents will get you a small Ocean Water at Sonic but not much else.

A lot of which doesn't require a degree to do. You don't have to spend 1000's of dollars to learn what she is learning, just get a damn library card or a kindle.

Now it's all "frick studying something that you enjoy, get a real major so you can make money doing a job you hate."

You can still study something you enjoy while learning a discernible skill. If you are there on Mommy and Daddy's dime and they don't care what you do then go right ahead. The problem is we have way too many people today piling up shite's ton of student debt then taking decades to pay it off because they got some worthless liberal arts degree.

Hell take a specialization in entrepreneurship if you truly just want to do what you want to do.

Besides most entry level positions are going to suck anyways when you get out of college. The number of college grads going back home to live with their parents nowadays is staggering. Learn some skills, take internships, and just get work experience then eventually you can do whatever makes you happy.

I just don't think anyone here is in a position to decide what is sufficient education for another person

That's making a lot of assumptions based on looking at a girls curriculum.

There are lots of majors I don't get...like women's studies, journalism, and kinesiology but people like different shite than I do.

And the world needs teachers, coaches, poets, and baristas.

I am going to take a random women's studies class. If anyone asks why I am there, I will say, "court ordered."

Women's Studies is a great major. There will always be women, therefore always a demand, the market is limitless.

I have what could be considered a useless major. I'm actually embarrassed enough by it that I don't even like people asking me what my degree is because I don't want to tell them.

With that said, at LEAST I have been working in that field since graduation and I think I'm doing alright. With all that said...I honestly don't know what would possibly possess someone to major in WS. I mean, there isn't really a women's studies "field" to enter after graduation. Just seems like the place to go for ultra liberal feminazis who think they're doing something strong and proactive.

She'll be a professional man hating brainwashed feminist activist.

Lotta money these days in hating white men.

Since she is majoring in women studies, shouldn't she just be learning how to cook, clean and how to make your man happy?

A lot of things would affect how wise I think this is.

For instance...is she on scholarship? Maybe she is not spending a dime on this degree.

Does she want to go to law school?

Rich parents? Maybe she can just walk into a job after she graduates.

Anyway, I hope she enjoys her degree and her time at college. I am not completely sure what kind of career you get into with this degree (other than probably going to law school or going on and getting a PhD and teaching). If she has found a career path she wants to do and is happy doing it, that's great.

Sure, happiness matters. But she has no career path in mind yet apparently. I'm assuming she'll switch majors by her junior year.

This is pretty important, IMO. Not enough people realize how many people are being trafficked and held against their will and used as sex slaves.

It's really no more or less useful than any other degree that doesn't have a precisely defined career path attached to it (Pre-med, MBA, etc..).

Works fine as a pre-law degree. Also works well if she's wanting to go into public service, policy, or politics. Lots of jobs in the non-profit sector for that kind of major as well.

What's most important is that she capitalize on her opportunities there and network while she's in school. I know that the idea of education for education's sake is out of vogue, but there are still people out there that want to just learn about something that interests them and hope that they'll be able to make a lucrative career out of it. If not, there's always teaching (I'm in education, heh).

I actually agree with Slippery Slope here -- there are some fields which she can get into immediately with a degree like this if she meets the right people.

It's what she wants to do; it may have some strange connotations that go with it but if she's doing something she enjoys and it harms no one else directly (the prices of tuition could be argued, but it'd be a long stretch) then let her do it.
