What a douche your friend is. It would've been better if he'd written a check and sat his Murican arse at home.

I actually agree with wmr, but central/South America is a bad example.

I have a cousin who went to the Netherlands with campus crusade to 'minister' to Muslims there. She spent 2 weeks there and then left with nothin to show for it.

I think this is more the example you're looking for.

I admit it Diddy. I posted a picture of my and my wife hiking up Lone Mountain yesterday on Facebook.

I apologize bro. Where do I send the check?

I went on one in high school. The church paid for it all for the most part. We helped run water from a well to a village in Honduras. It was pretty fun and rewarding, but my buddy and I got sent home 2 days early for sneaking out at night to party with the locals.

Business customer friend of mine just got back from a 3 week vacation in kenya. He spent 1 week doing volunteer work with a church group and the other 2 weeks looking at wild animals etc.

Alex has no particular skills but he spent his time painting a new school and helping build a water line. he also signed up to sponsor an orphan for a year at a local church run boarding school.

Some people probably do it for the self righteous satisfaction.
Most people however, do it just because it's a good thing to do.

Either way they are doing something good. Also there seems to always be a small number of people in every group that gives everyone in that group a bad name.

We really weren't doing anything nefarious when we got caught(though admittedly we had intentions to), but my friend had already had it out with one of the chaperones a few times and that was the last straw. I was guilty by association.

Don't hold modern Christians to any sort of standard. They really, really hate that.

What are you supposed to get to show for it? A t-shirt?

diddy, you're fighting the good fight against people that change the rules as they go. It might be time to pack it up.

You could alleviate a lot of suffering by not posting sh!t about folks that are at least making a good faith effort to help the less fortunate, it aint just the money, it's getting involved face to face with people, building trust and relationships. That is all you're dismissed.

I'm not changing any rules, I didn't say shite about South America.

Missionaries such as the machine gun preacher or people like doctors without borders are doing it right. I'd say the same for the people going to South America and helping with whatever charity wise.

However, there is a right way and a wrong way to do it, and going overseas to convert Muslims or eastern Christians for a campus crusade week long trip is the wrong way.

First off, the Netherlands, or any 1st world nation is not in need of your charity more than your friend next door or the families living in south LA are.

Secondly, there is charity, and then there is missionary work. What everyone here is describing is mostly charity. You left with a concrete difference being made.
