Not sure if there is another job that makes sense for him, or if he was reassured what he's thought all along - Bama is his when Saban leaves.

Either way, he was offered in the $2.3M/year range. Glad to hear he's staying. Hate that he considered it to the point of negotiation.

I don't. If someone offers you $2.3 million you at least sit down and listen to what they have to say.

Funny that Bama DC > AU HC though.

ETA: Read it wrong...either way, my point still stands.

He will have my support for the Alabama job when the time comes. His potential would be unknown but I'm not sure anyone else outside the program can understand what it takes to run this machine.

I want him to get a job in the Big East or ACC so that he can maintain recruiting connections while learning how to be a head coach.

Look for Saban to continue passing Kirby some responsibilities. He has already over the past three years slowly but steadily given Kirby more control over gameplan and in game calls (Saban still has final say, obviously).

I think Saban is grooming Kirby to take the job. I know it was a ton of money, but I don't think Saban would have blessed it like he would have Arky or Tenn. JMO based on a few conversations.

That would actually be 1997, but it was completely different with Mike Dubose. Dubose was a DC for one season. One. Before taking over as headcoach for a scholarship riddled program that had never really capitalized on the 1992 national title, or even the 1994 success.

Either that or Kirby just took a step back, slapped himself in the face, and realized that taking the Auburn job while Saban is in Tuscaloosa is close to career suicide.

I would wait to see what Saban has to say. If Saban promotes Smart as his successor, then who am I to dispute it? If it happened tomorrow, I would defer, and fully support Smart.

What Saban has to say--or not say--about it is key.

Well, Saban promoted Nutt as his successor at LSU, but that's cause Saban was taking muschamp to the pros with him. I think the job would and should be Kirby's if he hangs around.
I just don't know how much we are gonna have to end up paying him to do so.

He's had a lot of offers and turned them down, it's pretty obvious he wants to go to a good college and isn't going to settle for any old offer.

I agree--glad to see Kirby stay too! If he eventually leaves us he should wait out for the right opportunity. Not every deal is a good one. If he is patient, the right deal will come along. In the mean time, he continues to raise his stock while working with Saban. Win/Win for him.

If he stays until Saban retires he, at the very least, deserves an opportunity to interview and be seriously considered as for the head coach position. Obviously when that day comes we will have to consider all of our options.

Auburn is a dumpster fire.
Tenn. would've been better for him.

I don't want him to leave, but if he does
Good Luck.

Saban can adapt.

Imagine if Les Miles lost Chavis?
