Yeah, you could tell his confindence really suffered at some point when he realized the game was a little faster and more physical than he'd been accustomed to. He certainly got it back towards the end of the season.

plus Nelson won't be asked to play the 5 spot much

Right before he committed last year I remember us specifically talking about his tendency to trail defensively against slashing guards.

That combined with his physical stature against big men really put him at a huge disadvantage this season, but if anything hopefully it helped him to understand the nuances of the stretch-four position even more, such as how to better open up driving lanes for teammates, for example (because he should better understand what the five is supposed to be doing).

Nelson is going to be an awesome piece this season. Having a 4 who can guard the post is a luxury. And the addition of Cliff is going to improve his perimeter defense. Last year, on switches Nelson couldn't rely on help-side rim protection because he was the rim protection, so he had to sag way off the perimeter. He (and everyone else) should be able to be more aggressive guarding the perimeter, which should hopefully lead to more turnovers and transition buckets.

Unpopular opinion but they’ll be Top 10 caliber next year. They retain a ton

It is funny how they are probably gonna add a rotational SMU guy after repeatedly striking out though

I agree. They're going to be a damn good team next year.

And as much as I like to laugh at Pearl for shite like Yale, he's actually a great coach. He's going to get his 700th win this season. That doesn't happen for many people.

Yeah they will be good, but they retained a ton this past season too. AU will pad their wins to look more impressive than they are though. I truly believe if they beefed up their non-conference schedule a little more they would be more ready when it comes to the tournament that actually matters.

I'll say a big positive with Pearl is he does retain a lot of his players and that experience and chemistry can go a long way early in the season and when trying to get over a wall during the season.

However, he never addressed the needs as to why he's been bounced early in the tournament ever since his FF run. Guard play wins in March.

Once all of his guys have graduated, it'll be interesting to see how Pearl does because he's going to have a hell of a rebuild after this coming season.

Agreed. I was sitting with a mixed group of fans watching the selection show, Auburn fans, understandably, were upset with their seeding. It's pretty well known the committee will reward schools with tougher OOC games if resumes are basically a coin flip.

That's why I love how Oats schedules. There are times when I wish he would ease up a bit but in those kinds of games, you're not getting punished for a loss and your players are gaining valuable experience that will benefit through the year. I wish sometimes we'd lessen the amount of tough games and let our guys breathe a bit but those 30+ blowout wins don't help anyone late in the season.
