I am not sure how Deboer will work out long term but for him to have a chance he needs to have players that buy in to what he wants.

These players jumping ship are part of the reason Saban hung it up. Recruit a player once and still have to recruit them every off season to stay.

For those that do not remember Saban was blasted in the media and a website was dedicated to him about oversigning. He gutted the roster on his arrival.

I don’t claim to have any “inside” information, just my gut instinct. So many of these kids (especially skill set players) come in and expect to start from Day One. Some of those type guys can’t take the bruised ego that they’re not quite ready.

I still contend that some of these guys (not all, but some) get really bad advice from from family or “family friends” or handlers who whisper in their ear that the player is being done wrong, he should leave and “get a better deal somewhere else”,

Or, he may just miss his girlfriend back home and wants to play closer to home.

DeBoer has not had very many transfers since he took over though. In the Spring period, he basically only lost:

1) Two kickers because he signed a kicker who won the Groza last year
2) Some veterans who are near the end of their eligibility, buried in the depth chart
3) The backup center likely to lose out to the Fr. All-American center transfer
4) True freshman early enrollee DB who is not likely to contribute in 2024
5) Walk-ons

But he's gotten a starting left tackle out of the portal, the top kicker in the nation, and a safety the staff seems really high on as a developmental option.
