That's not usually how it works unless UK voluntarily said scram, which I highly doubt even though they wanted him gone. Usually the buyout is to protect both sides. Much like the situation with Oats. If he were to leave voluntarily for UK, Uk would have to pay us 18 million to buy his contract out.

And frick them in all of this paying 8 million a year to not only take the underwhelming coach from Kentucky, but also opening up a coaching search with our guy squarely in the crosshairs

In Goats I trust. Also, it will be fun to see Arkansas as miserable as Kentucky fans have been in a few years

They just assume anybody will want the job

In this particular case he'd have to want it and they'd have to be willing to put down $25+ million up front between his buyout and first year salary for him and his staff. That's a much, much tougher financial pill to swallow than paying Cal $33 million over several years.

Trilly is saying Billy Donovan is interested in the job and Barnhart first call will be to Scott Drew

But it this case, it is true. Calipari had no buyout if he left. Similar to Saban’s contract had that ever occurred.

Am I overrating Billy D or underrating Scott Drew if I think it's insane to call Drew first if both are interested? Or am I rating them correctly and it is insane?

Highly highly doubt that. He has several daughters still in school, youngest is in middle school and the oldest is at UA. Not the time to uproot them.

This is also a factor. There is a slight chance UK’s AD can sell him but Byrne forecasted the market and generously compensated him before it even opened

It’s more that Billy Donovan has been out of the college game for a decade and the game has changed a great deal. We haven’t seen Billy Donovan deal with portal/NiL and his willingness to deal with that. Hes won at the college level already.

He may very well want out of Chicago because they are perpetually spinning their wheels in mediocrity. He left college to go coach Durant and Westbrook and now he has Zach Levine and injured Lonzo Ball. Not great Bob.

All that being said…I highly doubt Donovan would have any issues(especially at Kentucky) with NiL/transfers. But Drew is a known entity and seems to be bought in to being a college coach. Might be as simple as that.

Happy but they are never satisfied. They used to envy villanova but now UCONN is the next obsession.

Man I’m ready for this guy to get taken down a peg. In humiliating fashion would be nice. He is a world class prick. Unfortunately I don’t think Purdue has the dudes outside of Edey to do it.

Pride comes before the fall brother. It will happen.

Just got home. Reflecting back, glad I went. The kids fought their absolute arse off. I watched the bench a lot they never gave up. It was literal 100% effort. UConn is that good. Some shots didn’t fall for us. If Nate can do this with this group they better watch out when we have 3 studs or so. The attitude of the players after the game was complete and utter class. I’ve never been so proud of a team in my life, period.

Also, speaking with the UConn fans around me, they all said they have never been as nervous playing anyone this tournament like they were us. Said they were on the edge the entire game especially when Sears drained a 3 near the end. That speaks volumes.

So far we have had the attitude 3 times, the experience 2 times, and the personnel 1 time, just never more than 2 of the 3 at once. Eventually I think the stars will align and we will have all 3 at once. That team will get taken down by a 9 seed in the second round. Then the inexperienced group of freshmen and transfers that replaces that team will win a title.

They just agreed to pay a 33 million dollar buyout plus im assuming they will pay Cal in the ballpark of 8-10 mill a year.

Cal doesn’t have a buyout from another school, just from UK. The $33 million was only if they fired him.

I'd be shocked if we lost Nate due to money. I don't think that will happen. I also don't think the arena thing matters to him much at all as long as we continue committing all the resources he requests to NIL and basketball budget (which we have and he is very happy with). Would he have the leverage to basically demand firm arena stuff? Probably. Would we give it to him? I think we'd do as much as we could.

The concern would be that Nate wants to go to the pinnacle of college basketball and dominate the sport for a decade. If he decides that is what he wants to do, then there isn't much we can do to respond. I think that he really likes the setup at Alabama and feels like he's done all the hard work to set the foundation and is at a point and is now at a point to take the ultimate step. But it would be insane to just brush off Kentucky if they come at him with the full court press. I don't think it's anywhere near an automatic that he'd leave, but any young, hungry basketball coach would be intrigued by that.

It’s about “culture, the preparation, the commitment to every aspect of the game,” he said, “so that we keep ourselves as bulletproof as possible in this tournament, which we make a hard tournament look easy. It’s crazy.”

Sounds a lot like Nick Saban to me. Y’all Hurley haters need to just appreciate how good a coach he is and what he has accomplished.

We’re going to see a lot more programs adopt Nate Oats analytics driven style. Having the ability to get top talent every single year is difference in Alabama/UK.

He’s ahead of the curve right now and that’s why we can bring in players who want to play in his system. What happens when half the league is running the same system in 4-5 years? You’re going to want the advantages to get the best players.

Yea Hurley is awesome. He has unlimited swagger, but he's a basketball coach in the Northeast that grew up in a basketball family in New Jersey. It's all part of the package and it's what that type of program wants and needs.

And let's not pretend our guy isn't pretty blunt and arrogant at times. I love Hurley and even more so love watching his team play basketball.
