This is arguably much more meaningful than "The Play" given that Duke lost should've won when the Miami player actually went down, and it took them out of the top 25. Miami and Duke eventually went 8-5 with average seasons.
I strongly disagree it is "much more meaningful." Miami and Duke don't give the first frick about one another, whereas Cal and Stanford have been playing a heated rivalry for over a century now.

quote:Uh, yes, it was the first time for someone to win a football game with a bunch of laterals on a kickoff as time expires. Imitating what Cal did is why everyone does it.
This is not the first time a kickoff has been returned for a TD with numerous laterals. There are far less short field goals that have been returned for a game winning TD.
I don't know how you choose between these two. Both unforgettable moments in their own right. One big difference was that everyone in the nation got to watch the Kick Six live as it happened. The only thing that "The Play" has on Kick Six is that it allowed Cal to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat (of course, with Kick Six, Bama was a few feet from winning the game, so this is pretty close, too).

I watched most of that game from Tightwad Hill until they opened the gates in the last two minutes. The only reason Cal won is because Stanford coach Paul Wiggin left .02 seconds on the clock after kicking what they thought was a game-winning field goal. Huge coaching blunder. The loss also cost Stanford a bowl bid and was Elway’s last game at Stanford.

Leaving 2 seconds on the clock after taking the lead isn't a coaching blunder, much less a huge one.

Give me the actual greatest play ever, thanks.
I would throw George Teague running down Lamar Thomas and completely embarrassing him in there as one of the greatest. But I’m biased as well.

It was absolutely a huge coaching blunder by Wiggin. He elected to take a time out with 5-6 seconds remaining on the clock instead of running it down to .02 seconds. Never leave time on the clock in that situation. Wiggin was fired the following year and replaced by Jack Elway, who had beaten Stanford three times while coaching at San Jose State. I was there, man, and all the Stanford fans were wondering why coach Wiggin left time on the clock.

Even as a kid I thought the play was unremarkable
No serious person thinks the play is more interesting than Kick Six from a CFB perspective
Arguably it's funnier and has more going on to watch, but it's inferior in every way that matters.

Yeah winning 24 games including a Cotton Bowl, Sugar Bowl, and an SECC the last 2 seasons has been a real bummer.

I know it’s tough for SEC events to not be the center of the universe for 14 seconds. You’ll power through this!

You have to go back to the 2018 season for a championship without an asterisk and that hurts you. I understand. You're not used to being second thought for such a long period of time. You will get used to it. Don't worry.

Cal vs. Auburn: Who has the greatest college football play ever, and why is it the Play?
Both were dramatic, and unbelievable moments, BUT, there were 2 or 3 times where The Play could have been stopped but the guy being tackled miraculously tossed the ball to another Cal player to keep the play going.
Add in the band, and it was a better moment, but only slightly.

as an AU fan, the Kick 6 will always be the pinnacle for me - Rod Bramblett's call sends chills - miss that guy. one of the absolute best

EAsily the Kick 6. The Play was filled with forward laterals and knees touching the ground and no offical blowing the whistle. If instant replay were around then, the Play would have been called back and the game would be over.
Kick 6 was fricking amazing, not only for the play itself, but for the entire 4th quarter that led up to it. Back to back 4th down stops, blocked FGs, 99 yard Td pass, CBS giving bama a second when the clock ran out....then it happened. Pure Karma. Bama tries to steal the game with their bs 1 second and it came back to bite them. fricking glorious
Plus it was a top 4 matchup, bama going for three peat, Auburn recovering from a 3 win season going worst to first.
Kick 6 was the perfect play that represents college football.

Kick Six
I feel like kick six and the prayer at Jordan-Hare are somehow tied together, even if they’re separate plays. I can’t imagine being an Auburn fan in November 2013.
ETA - as much as I hate hearing it - Bramblett also had a lot to do with the Kick 6 experience. An amazing call that nailed the moment.

Bama trying to cheat getting 1 sec added back on. Karma. Kick 6
Sitting in the stands for both games. Still gives me chills remembering it.

Well, considering the SEC is strong enough to pull random Kansas fans into its orbit and prompt them to incessantly provide eyeroll inducing contrarian takes, I'm not sure that's true
