LSU head coach Brian Kelly spoke with the media on Thursday after practice and was asked about Maason Smith who still getting back to his full form after missing last season with an ACL injury.

Kelly explained that Smith is doing a lot of the "dirty work" on LSU's defensive line and that they need to get more creative with him as the season progresses.

"He’s doing a lot of things for us," Brian Kelly said. "He's played a lot of the nose for us this season, he's 2-gaping in the nose. It's a dirty job."

"He was playing a lot of 3 & 5 technique his freshman year. He had a lot of opportunities to make big plays. He's not getting as many opportunities to make the kind of impact that he did as a true freshman. And he's only played in about 13 college games. We need to have a little patience. He's doing some of the dirty work. He's freeing up our linebackers, and he's doing the work he's been asked to do."

"I think maybe we need to be a little more creative with him and maximize some of the things that he can do for us. And I think maybe we'll start to see that as we move through the season."

Jefferson is a man. I was hoping Guillory would be dominant by now.

2 gap is stupid. Put him at 3 tech and let him eat.

Maason criticism has been unwarranted. Different spots and allowing the guys around him to shine,

I'm a big Maason fan but he is struggling, seems weak in his legs.

At nose you can’t do a ton. If they move him around a bit you may see something special . Not many nose guards are noticed unless super elite and he’s not built that way as a nose

All off season we've heard when he's back they will double him and it would free up someone else to get the QB. We haven't been as free, so far, as we should be.
