re: Passenger Van Rental (9 seater)
Posted by aileron on 2/19/24 at 10:45 pm
I rented a 12/15 Ford Transit from Avis at IAD last summer. We had 9 people for a week driving around the DC-Philly area. It was comfortable for all and the van drives and handles great. ...
re: Travel Anxiety After Having A Baby
Posted by aileron on 12/20/23 at 12:35 pm
I have that every time I travel for work too. The "daddy don't go" is heartbreaking. Mine's a few years older now so we can video chat on WhatsApp while I'm on the trip. That helps. I also bring one of her toys (small toy figure) and I take photos of it doing different things like being on the plane...

re: Go to Tokyo or Guam?
Posted by aileron on 4/24/23 at 3:59 pm
Guam is an interesting place. There's a ton of Japanese tourists there for a taste of America. There are lots of American chain restaurants and shooting ranges. There's also a large contingent of US military folks and their families. There are a few WWII sites that are cool to visit and some nice b...

Air jets manipulate the pressure and leading edge vortices on the top of the wings. Do you even Bernoulli bruh?...

re: Day trip to Omaha Beach from Paris
Posted by aileron on 1/9/23 at 7:11 am
It's definitely doable. I took the train to Caen and went to the D-day museum there. They offer semi-private tours from the museum. We were in a minivan with a couple of other Americans and we hit all the high points with time to wander (Omaha, Utah, Pointe du Hoc, American cemetery, German cemeta...
re: Any astrophysicists or astrospace engineers here?
Posted by aileron on 12/27/22 at 8:06 pm
I'm an aerospace engineer. One of my classmates in college did just what you are thinking about. He was a few years older than the rest of us but he was more focused and didn't fool around going to bars and parties. After graduation he ended up going to Navy flight school...he just barely made the a...
re: Is a 40 minute layover for an international flight doable in Houston?
Posted by aileron on 11/30/22 at 9:14 am
Another thing to consider, that flight is not 1h26m.. moreso about 1h10m gate to gate
This. 1:26 is the block time not the flight time. United pads their block time for more favorable delay reporting. Flight time is like 46 minutes MSY-IAH. You'd probably end up with closer to 1 h...
Tile over wood deck
Posted by aileron on 11/21/22 at 11:29 am
I have a covered porch with PT decking. It's 6 inches off the ground above dirt and partly slab. It's in good condition with no rot but I'd like to lay tile on top of it. Any reason I can't/shouldn't do that? I was planning to lay down cement backer board between the decking and the tile....
Holiday team lunch near ORD
Posted by aileron on 11/1/22 at 8:42 pm
I'm trying to put together a Christmas lunch for my Chicago-based team members but I'd like to find an interesting place like a brewery or something outside of the loop. Close to ORD would be preferred since I'm flying in/out that day for the lunch. Any recommendations? ...

re: Any travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil?
Posted by aileron on 7/27/22 at 8:56 pm
I've flown in and out of Rio about 30 times in the last 15 years. No issues at the airport. The flights to and from the USA are overnight flights. Before the World Cup, the Rio airport didn't have air conditioning and it was miserable. It's much better now. The worst hamburger I've ever had was in t...
