Urban Meyer Uses 1 Word To Describe Why The SEC Is Greater Than The Big 10
© Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports
Urban Meyer recently ranked the SEC as the #1 conference in the country and said there's one word that describes why...
quote:

“The word is attitude,” Meyer said on FOX. “When I was in the SEC, the attitude was how to dominate. When you talk about college football, it’s about recruiting and that’s all they talked about in the SEC. It’s about players, it’s about national championships, it’s about getting to the show. They didn’t care about anything else other than themselves. You kind of admire that. When I went to the Big Ten, I was kind of shocked. Everyone kind of recruited in their footprint. They didn’t step out and say national recruit and let’s talk about national championships. I was shocked by that. I think by 2014-15, the Big Ten (was) if not the best conference, they’re right there with the SEC. I think the Big Ten at the top can play with any team in the SEC. But top to bottom, the SEC is best why? Attitude. They don’t apologize for being great and I have a lot of respect for that.”

The "national" recruiting comment was a bit odd - Michigan, tOSU and even Wisconsin get players from all regions, more so than most SEC teams, including nationally competitive teams like Auburn which does sort of fall into recruiting "zones". Only Bama and Florida (which perhaps skews his perspective) are truly "national" recruiters out of the conference, although LSU and UGA certainly try to at times. Weird comment. Not really consistent with reality. The "attitude" is spot on, though - most SEC teams (rightfully) think they can at least hang with any elite team from other conferences. Iron sharpens iron.

Actually I think Urban has it backwards. In 2014 and 2015 the Big Ten was nowhere near the SEC. IMO it's starting to catch up. Why? Well the Big Ten has hired some good coaches. Franklin at Penn St., Allen at Indiana. Day has kept Ohio St. at the same level that Meyer had them. Harbaugh has certainly made Michigan better than they were before he got there. I still think the SEC's deeper but there's no way the Big was as good as the SEC 5 years ago.

Even better would be "defense" - defense is typically what separates the SEC from other conferences. While the Big1 does field some good defenses (and individually produces some excellent players), no two conferences are remotely as good as the SEC is on defense, top to bottom.

At Florida, it’s their dumb cocky attitude. At LSU the word he’s describing is “Passion”.

That's weird. When I think of LSU I think of douchebags.

That's weird. When I think of Mizzou I think of a football program that had such financial problems they had to join the SEC to survive financially but they are still as average to below average as they always have been.

Is that why Urban consistently recruited the gulf south when he was at OSU? Man that north “holier than thou” thing is such a crock of moose shite.

He didn’t say he stayed in his schools footprint. He said that was the attitude when he arrived.

Its not Attitude you dumb shite...its the athletic facilities and the training programs. They are much better than Big 10 schools.

Considering Burrow couldn't start at Ohio State I'm not sure why you'd have thought that.
