Why do so many people think we need to make big changes to the offense?

We were 3 points (in overtime) away from winning a National Championship that many of us believe was impacted by the referees more than you would like to see in any game. We are replacing our two departing backs with the best back we've ever had and a great change of place back in Cook who is a great receiver as well. Our OL will only get better as Wilson and Salyer compete for playing time next season. Our DBs will get better as Kirby brings in the long, rangy style DBs he loves instead of guys like Malkom Parrish and Tyrique McGhee who are both 5'10".
The worst thing we can do is panic like Texas did after the 09 National Championship and go away from what we're great at. Continue to pound the ball down our opponent's throat, mix up some passes and dominated the LOS on offense. And we've all seen what Kirby can do on defense. Last night was definitely the hardest game to experience as a Georgia fan, and leaving the stadium I was pretty dang heartbroken for those guys who gave their all, but we really do have a bright future if we keep at it.

Our offense evolved in the 2017 season from start to finish.
Our experience, our personnel, our formations.
There is nothing wrong with trying to improve.
If you aren't working to get better, you aren't going to get better.
I don't think anyone expects wholesale changes. I don't think anyone expects anything drastic either. But the big attraction for having Chaney was that he is known for fitting an offense with the personnel and style he is asked to do. And with as many analysts as we seem to employ, he is getting ideas in dozens of different directions.

Who is saying this?
Every single person that has said we need to fire Chaney, of which there are many.

I don't know where the commentary is coming from. I do think it's fair to say that you had 2 exceptional backs in Chubb and Michel... and while I agree that the incoming talent is probably on par with where those guys were as freshmen... replacing their leadership and production, along with their football IQ may be a little more challenging than some are willing to accept. Doesn't mean it can't be done, but I do think a plan B is required regardless. Have to have the ability to stretch the field when plan A isn't getting it done (because let's face it, Bama's Run D isn't likely to change drastically any time soon).
I don't think we should be trying to convert to some kind of fling it 50 times a game offense, but shooting for something like ~ 55/45 run/pass balance in the first half of games at least is a worthwhile goal. If we're running down their throats in the second half, so be it.
Definitely sucked to see it end like that, but as you said, the direction of the program is looking up. Gimme couple of long 5* DBs in this class and I'd be thrilled... though I think we probably settle on one.

The offense as players is great but running the day play up the middle with the same players against the best defense in the nation is not to smart. Should have use swift or Hardman and sweep left or right and keep burning them on the edges. Spread their defense and wear them out.

I think we are all pretty mystified by Chaney's relentless will to punch Chubb up the middle all 4Q when clearly Sony was the better back yesterday.

I mean I don’t think we should fire him, but the play calling in the 4th quarter was pretty bad.
Either it was Kirby or Chaney that decided to go super conservative with a 10 point lead, but we aren’t the team that can just run the ball down and kill 9 minutes against a team like Bama.
I mean we called wild dawg twice in the same possession and came up with a yard, I have no problem running the ball on third and two, but we could have at least came out with the big boys and did a fullback dive. As long as Fromm is under center there is a threat of throwing the ball. As soon as we came out in wild dawg every single linebacker came up to bust the play up.
It was just mind boggling watching us blow a lead bc we went to conservative too fast.

Kind of sat on my couch wondering how we could have Chaney from last week yesterday? I’m not sure why we kept running Chubb, but they had to see something to keep trying it.

Because we aren’t simply reloading at tailback after having so much talent from gurley/Marshall to Chubb/Michel .
From throwing to Wims/Hardman/Godwin/Ridley are going to be a force next year though

I was absolutely livid we weren't giving the ball to Sony. He was fantastic. It was more of a realizing we aren't that far off. It's not like we need to make a ton of changes to win a Natty. We just needed a couple things to go differently.

The Wild Dawg with Mecole taking the snap was a thing of beauty. When he put the ball in Sonys belly the entire defense took a step to their left following Sony. Mecole practically walked in.

I have no problem calling the wild dawg down in the red zone.
It was a great play call at that time, but it was a horrible call when we were trying to chew clock.
Just my opinion though.

Punching the center won’t work

Hell the wild dawg would be better if they actually tried a pass. So much offensive talent not utilized.

Kirby signed a bunch of really big and highly ranked O linemen a few weeks back along with some highly ranked stud runners. I think that is a pretty good indicator of what he wants to do on offense.

We don't. For as much as people want to crap on chaney, as you mentioned we were in OT of the national title game so we clearly did something right. Let's not forget Lord Saban played an athlete that can't throw at QB for an entire half that led to zero points. They came back and started scoring because they have 5 stars at every position and they ended up playing like it.
Sure i have my qualms here and there with Chaney, but it's not like he did a ton different in '17 than '16, it's just we had a lot more playmakers across the board. That trend is only going to continue. I myself would liek to see more routes over the middle by the TE and more outside running, but that's being nitpicky. We didn't lose because of Chaney.

we definitely turtled in the second half, but our offense played extremely well this season, and the gameplan coming into the NCG was solid. that's the staff that got us to the game, remember, and we were playing the #1 defense in the country.

Speaking of TE's and the Wild Dawg, a designed jump pass to Nauta from Chubb would have worked beautifully.
