Was the recruiting always between UGA and Clemson? I remember hearing he was was headed to Southern Cal at one time. I also heard he was an excellent student and had a killer SAT score. Anyone know what kind of student he was?

i think back then it wasn't as much as an issue as it is now. ND didn't have trouble getting talent then as much as they do now. tech too.
not to mention i gurandamntee you that both schools would've "accepted" him

At the very end it was Clemson,USC,UGA...then just the later...supposedly a coin flip decided between USC and UGA...Bama got eliminated early...Herschel was not gonna be in a wishbone offense

There was also a coin flip between going to college and going to war.

I went into college with a very high grade point average. I knew, from what my parents had told me, that as long as you apply yourself, you are going to succeed.

Let's not go overboard...HW still had to take "special studies" when he arrived @ UGA (at least in English)...he went to a small school in rural Ga. Grades don't exactly mean a whole lot. I don't think he was exactly lights out on his SAT
