Not really football related but figured some might be interested. I lived in River Mill for 3 years and my whole life I was used to seeing the Blind Pig across the street. That obviously was shut down years back, sat dormant for a minute, and now is a Wings N Burger place. Our crew has been tailgating in that lot a few years now and love it. We were told by the owners of that old 2-story brick apt building right next to it that in December or January they are going to tear down the old Blind Pig building and the apartments next door to build a 5 story mixed use development. I know progress and change are inevitable but that really bums me out. It's just not going to look right seeing some monstrosity in that location. I feel like every time I go to Athens and especially downtown it looks different than the last time. I fear that one day years from now Athens isn't going to be the quaint little college town it's been for ages and just be a hodgepodge of other modern establishments that look exactly like any other town.

Frankly, it's already getting there... It's unfortunate but inevitable it seems...

That sucks, but it's not surprising!

We've parked in the Williams Street lot for years and we used head in and out of the Blind Pig on gamedays. Was a major bummer when they closed that location. Talking the people there, they said they made a killing on gamedays but struggled the rest of the year.

Im pretty sure there's still some "cheese" fry sauce slicked in my colon somewhere from BP.

What we need is another good old fashioned recession to slow the development.

I lived in Rivermill from 94-97, then River Club to wrap up.

I remember the Ice House and O'Malley's, though O Malleys was in decline at that point.

I lived in River Mill.

I got to enjoy Abilene Icehouse and O'Malleys for a few years.

Fortunately, Abilene was replaced with Blind Pig.
Unfortunately, O'Malleys was replaced with Dial America.

You win some. You lose some.

that was definitely before my time, although I heard about omalleys. When I was there it was a "Dial America" building. Fun fact: there was a brief time period where Brantley Gilbert bought the place and actually lived in there for a time. This would have been around 2007.

a shitty modern day bro-country singer like jason aldean that is very popular. Living there was obviously before he blew up nationally.

Not to the point he's at now I mean. Back then I think he was mostly doing songwriting and had hit it somewhat big with selling songs to the popular guys at the time. A short time later is when he actually hit it big by playing.

If you think that’s bad wait til you hear that the Bank of America lot and the little lot on the other side of the old Taste of India location downtown are about to be filled in with tall buildings and the bottom floor is going to be a mini-Target that spans all 3 buildings.

Athens has also added an axe throwing bar chain and a sake bomb chain thing on Clayton. Also they’ve cut down most of the trees on Clayton.

I tend to agree with whoever said that the city and students peaked in the early 2000s

If it makes you feel any better, the Athens you know and love is vastly different than it was when I lived in Rivermill before you. Each of us will miss the Athens we loved as it changes, but to the new students, the new Athens will be the Athens they love and will oneday mourn over as it too changes.
And not all changes are negative. DT is much better than it was back in the day.

And O'Malleys was a lot of fun once upon a time when it was one of the hot spots. It was nice to be able to stagger home to Rivermill.

Regarding the trees on Clayton, I didn't know they got whacked, but could it be because of the decrepit 200 year old sewer lines they they are replacing and not development?

That's when I lived in River Mill and frequented Blind Pig. Trivia and wings there on a weekly basis. Now that I live in Atlanta, I've had it with the same cookie cutter trendy mixed use development popping up on every corner. Seems like a crime that they're tearing down BP to slap up another one.

I was there from parts of 05-08. Still have my big refillable plastic Blind Pig mug that you can redeem for a fill up of PBR for $1.

Yeah they're everywhere. I suppose I don't mind the concept of them in general, as long as it "fits" within the neighborhood and landscape. Where this one is going most certainly does not fit.

That’s pretty much the reason why. I’ve also read/heard that they plan on redoing and expanding all the sidewalks. But this has been said for what seems like going on 5 years now. Who knows what it’ll look like when we pull into town in a year or two

My understanding is Athens is hurting for some in-town living options for non college kids (young professionals, active retirees, etc) and they’re just putting developments where they can
