Have a request regarding the general Macon/WR AFB area. Have a good friend looking at retiring from Active Duty US Air Force and taking a GS-12/13 his at Robins and is asking about what area is a good place to live. Anyone have legit advice on where to look? He's asking about Bonaire. Appreciate feedback to help a brother in arms out.

Old downtown macon has some of the historic homes that would be $1 million in Atlanta but are $65k in Macon, the only drawback is if you have kids, the schools are really bad and you should probably keep a German Shepard in your yard.

Bonaire and Kathleen are his best bets. North end of Warner Robins and South Macon are terrible places to live.

Perry is also nice, but a bit more rural.

Did you like Matlock better with the old Tyler Hudson or the young Tyler Hudson?

Grew up in the area and worked in Macon several years after college. Bonair, Kathleen, Perry are where you want to be. Nice area. Quick access to the base.

Old. Mostly because of the reruns I got to see as a kid didn't have the later seasons.

I got into Matlock in the late 90's watching reruns, and they mostly played the ones with the young Tyler Hudson.

I've been watching alot of Matlock lately, DVR. It's a great show to watch and unwind after a long day.

Some people smoke weed, some people tie flies, some people watch Matlock.

And some people go to law school because of Matlock. It's a good break from reality.

That's funny. I went to journalism school because of Fletch.

I live about 45 minutes from WR in the boondocks. WR is where we shop, and my girl played travel ball out of there, so I'm familiar with the area. Also half the county I live in work at the base, or so it seems. Bonaire, Kathleen & Perry are considered by most to be the better areas of Houston County, as Ncdawg previously said. Bonaire is the closest of the three to the base and sounds like a solid decision by your friend. I would really try to stay in these areas if I had kids in school. HOCO High, Veterans High, Perry High and their feeder schools range from good to great. Bonaire is really solid in this regard, too. If your friend doesn't have kids, he could get more house for his money in Warner Robins proper, and there still are SOME very nice areas there, but he better do his homework about crime in the area, first.

Was down there not to long ago and that looked to be the case.

Some nice looking land around though IIRC, especially on the outskirts of WR.

Lot of nice land. Particularly near Bonaire closer to the Twiggs/Bleckley County border of Houston County. Also some nice land down 247 near Pulaski County.

The best school combination is a strip of Kathleen that borders Perry, which gets you the best schools in the county. Everything is fairly close within the county, once you figure out how to dart around the major traffic blocks.

I would say Bonair, Kathleen or Perry as well. For the love of God do not live in Macon unless you would be north of Arkwright Road. Centerville and Warner Robins have their nice parts as long as you are south of Watson BLVD and west of Houston Lake Road. Does your friend have any children? If he does then he will want to look at the district maps because they can be a little convoluted. That does not mean that the schools are bad, but some schools are better than others (Veterans and Houston County vs Northside and Warner Robins). Depending on what size house and area he is looking for I can tell you some decent neighborhoods to look at. For the record I live in Kathleen.

agree with Kathleen/Bonnaire area comments. i live in a neigborhood called Bellemeade and love it. new neighborhood nearby is "The Tifffanys" super nice. higher end would be Millpond subdivision. i would not even consider Macon. Perry is nice i have several friends that live around cherokee pines golf course. good people.

Born and raised in Perry. My Dad worked at the Base for 35 years. I haven't lived in the area for over 20 years so it's obviously changed but Perry has stayed pretty much the same. Just had the first murder in 9 years, kids killed a friend of theirs. There's nothing to do there, but some people like that. I would definitely avoid Macon and most of WR. Tell your friend to hit Nu-Way for his chili dawg fix.
