Tough to follow a legend but SH does an adequate job. He’s a hometown boy, so that helps. I wish he had Munson’s inflections and intensity, but not many do. He and Zeier work well together.

Who else could have filled the shoes?

I like Scott he does a good job. No one will ever be Larry that's an impossible standard to hold anyone to, but Scott is fine.

I like him well enough but unlike Munson I don’t think I’d ever use any of his calls on a tailgating playlist. Some of them are just cringey calls and some his voice cracks. Really like him on basketball calls though. Does a good job with those

I think he can be a little quick to get into the shouting, but he does a fine job and he was the right man for he job. Nobody will be Munson, but I certainly don't dislike Howard by any stretch.

Like Munson saying “that kid from Philadelphia ran it a hundred miles back to the city of brotherly love” sounds better than “THE FRESHMAN RAN IT ALL THE WAY BACK TO PHILADELPHIA!”

Munson’s voice was a big part of it but he had a way of saying just enough to get his point across without drifting into trying too hard and without stating the obvious

Like, “Appleby! The end around! Just stopped, planted his feet and threw it! And washington caught it, thinking of Montreal and the olympics and ran right out of his shoes down the middle, 80 yards. Gator bowl rocking, stunned, the girders are bending now”

That’s poetry.

The only call that's really memorable to me was the overtime TD pass to beat Alabama in '07.

Far better basketball announcer than football announcer, but nobody can follow Larry Munson and live up to that.

The worst gig in the world is to be the man who follows The Man. I like him well enough, but if I'm not at a game, I'm watching it on TV, so it's always a case of hearing Howard's call ex post facto, for me.

Although, having been a Sanford last week, I don't understand why they don't nix the stadium announcer and just let Howard's call be broadcast on the PA.

I would be interested in hearing the answers from the younger generations that will not have grown up listening to Munson. There's really no comparison but I'm pretty biased from some very fond memories growing up listening to Munson while working with my Dad on the farm. The man just had a way of making you feel like you were in the stands or in the press box with him that I just don't get from Howard.

once munsons's brethren all die out (is eli gold one of the last remaining from that era of widely known home team announcers?) I doubt anyone is really going to even acknowledge the genre period. Kinda sad but it's the way of the world. Like you said, and like many of my older relatives mention as well, it was simply a different era where not everythign was on TV. Every game was on at 1pm and few were televised so you HAD to have a guy like munson really make you feel like you were there. Now not only is just about every game on some channel somewhere, you can stream it on your phone, ipad, whatever...it's virtually impossible to not be able to watch a game these days. The radio announcer doesn't have a whole lot of place anymore so as this younger generation grows up they aren't even going to really konw or care who the guy even is.

I actually listen to the Tailgate and Pregame shows on the radio every single game day. It's a part of my ritual and is usually while I am working the grill so food is ready at kickoff. Sometimes I do have to listen to the whole game on the radio if we are traveling or whatever and I don't mind SH at all. Of course there will never ever be another like Larry Munson.

If the damn TV and radio were able to synch up better, I'd damn sure rather listen to SH than Beth Mowins.

SH is pretty good. Larry was the GOAT. It is what it is.

That's for damn sure. When I saw that last weekend, I immediately muted the TV.

I remember being glued to the radio, heart pounding, listening to Munson. You really didn't need a tv.

I really thought he’d get run off after following Munson....I thought anyone would. Dude does a good job. Almost impossible to follow a legend the likes of Munson. He is a homer as he should be......we coulda done a lot worse.

Munson was a story teller first. It’s what made him a legend. Storytelling was required for most of his career because very few fans ever saw a game live in person....and TV didn’t exist. Ronald Reagan was an announcer during Munson’s early years....I read once that he often wasn’t even at the game! He definitely said he would make an otherwise boring game more interesting by painting a picture.......it was much more of an art in the day. No one needs to “ get the picture” anymore because we’ve seen the picture live so many times....but that phrase says it all.....it was all about “ getting the picture”. It’s a shame that young fans missed what was a big part of what made CFB as popular as it is......being blasted to homes and businesses in rural America when even radio was a novelty....those guys were ambassadors and Munson was the GOAT by a damn site!

Scott Howard’s signature calls sound contrived and forced. Of course no one is like Munson - who was irreplaceable.

Dawg ought to just take Wes Durham from Georgia Tech. He is generic but better than Scott Howard.

He is sufficient and probably followed Munson as well as anyone could have. I will say that he is a genuinely nice guy who is very accessible before the pre-game show begins. I have known EZ since high school and usually talk to him a few minutes before they go on air. Howard always comes over and says hello and I have seen him walk over to fans who are hanging around the tent to introduce himself. He goes out of his way to interact with random fans who are in the vicinity of their set up. I grew to like him a lot more than I might have if I didn’t see firsthand how nice a guy he is.
