I have a bad hunch that the main reason for our bland playcalling is because Kirby only allowed Chaney to call certain plays.

Kirby's philosophy is to get the ball in the hands of the playmakers and I truly believe that was the reason for all the stupid out passes to receivers lined up 5 yards behind the LOS that only work against shite/slow defenses.

The point I am making here is that I am worried we won't see much creativity from Coley and I believe Kirby intentionally kept Chaney reigned in. Not as bad as Muschamp did with Roper at UF but enough so that Chaney couldn't really open up the offense.

*note the only outlier here is the LSU game when we foolishly went away from our run game which was dominating.

Strong and stout offensive linemen can make a HC/offensive coordinator look like geniuses. Lack thereof can make them look like idiots. There are no excuses this season.

Chaney was a joke when we brought him in and now the vols are paying him top dollar to run their pathetic hopes into the ground. Coley will be the same

No Kirby was largely fricking pissed at our play calling, he was going off on Chaney on the headset in epic fashion on multiple occasions.

It's why we let Chaney go on.

Kirby never liked Chaney, personally. And I don't think he had much respect for him professionally. If he did, Chaney would still be here. I'm personally glad that he's gone. Pretty embarrassing to have a coach that obese.

Agree and I am glad Chaney is gone. Personally, I got tired of yelling at the tv "Chaney, you fat frick - what the hell are you doing?"

Don't carelessly fall into complicity with the self-serving groupthink on this board or any other. Jim Chaney is a very good OC, and he knows more about how to run an offense than you ever will, by an order of magnitude. Maybe we'll get lucky and Coley will do just as well, maybe even better. But, Chaney's habitus aside, he had an excellent grasp of what he was doing.

Elaborate, please. I, too, am glad he is gone but can this statement be backed up?

I’ve heard it from a few sources. One is a grad asst., one is a former player. Chaney received the wrath of many of Kirby’s tirades. Kirby is a bit of a perfectionist and I don’t believe a perfectionist tolerates obesity. It’s a sign of weakness. If Kirby liked Chaney, Chaney would not be trying to rebuild at UT. He’s too old and fat for that kind of shite. He’s going to get yelled at a lot more by Pruitt, and he’ll get his dry erase board kicked if he sits on the sideline.

Every OC will feel the wrath of the head coach.

If you lose a game, half of it is on the offense.

This is football. We shouldn't be shocked that an OC got an arse-chewing. Failure is never OK in the SEC. Stakes are too high. Players nor coaches are above it.

If Kirby continues to dictate the game plan and overrule OC calls on the sideline, we may all wish Chaney was back in a year or two.
Saban gets all upset and yells at his OC every game, but the Bama OC is in charge of the game plan and the play calls. Kirby Smart obviously didn't learn that from Saban.

Chaney's weight has nothing to do with his coaching ability. Pittman is huge too but we all love him because he's awesome at his job.

Chaney's biggest problem (which has been stated many times on this website) was his predictability.
