To answer why we throw to the sidelines....
It helps the running game. Throwing over the middle doesn't losen up the defense. We've done this for a long time even with Bobo (Hutson mason was a west coast QB and could do some real damage in the slant and crossing game, but he was exclusively challenging defenses at the sidelines).
Also... fromm's int was on a slant. Other INTs have been posts. There is a lot more traffic. A lot more danger when sailing a throw. And a lot more danger on a tip when throwing over the middle.
I absolutely think we need to throw more on first down. But I don't mind attacking the sidelines if it better protects the football.

There were 2 WRs running slants there. Fromm went to the deeper guy when the shorter one (Swift) was open about 5 yards deep.

Y'all don't know how game plans work, do you?
So where were all the game planning for when someone with a good Dline stuffs the running game, like Auburn? We all knew Auburn had the Dline to challenge us, but where was the gameplan for this at? To run it up the gut on 1st and 2nd down, late in the 3rd and in the 4th quarter? It was obvious that Auburns dline was manhandling our Oline. They were putting pressure on Fromm on the passing downs. So where is the game plan to counter this? Like the screen and draws? We did none vs Auburn, when we needed to. As we saw vs Kentucky, Chaney was calling the plays from a reactionary standpoint. Did you see how many draws we ran vs Kentucky, when we should have called some vs Auburn?
quote:How about the almost 2 years Chaney has been OC for us? Is that enough time to start trashing him? What about with Shotty, I think most could see he was a sack of shite with a headset on. Maybe some guys can't see these things, but for some, it is obvious. Before the season there were some questioning Chaney's playcalling, and when he was hired the same thing. Lets not act like Chaney was some home run hire that everyone just loved.
And you don't just trash a plan because some things do not work initially. For instance, you might run the ball up the middle several times early in the game to set up a play action pass, or simply to see how the defense reacts to certain plays. While running those inside runs that might be getting stuffed, they watch to see if the CB, S, LBs are crashing down on the run that might open up a slant or go route later in the game.

At the level Georgia is at, a coach probably puts in 12-14 hours a day during the season watching film, coaching at practice and forming game plans....while staying in touch with recruits they are recruiting.

There's either 1 of 2 things going on here.
One, there's a lot more going on with the play selection and play calling than casual fans know or understand...or
Two, fans know more about being an OC than the guy who has done it for a career and been paid very well doing so at the highest level.
Hmmmmm.....

Wow. That was interesting. Normally a right handed QB throws better to his right. With Fromm it seems to be the opposite.

There are a lot of advantages to throwing to the sidelines. During the broadcast the announcers said that Aaron Murray said coverage over the middle is tougher to read for a freshman QB.
Also, when you throw to the outside it makes the defense run from the middle of the field to the outside tiring them out a bit and making them work harder.
You seem right on your analysis, Meansonny. It's human nature for the other guys to pick things apart, though, I guess. If we threw more over the middle and we started getting picks they would be asking why Chaney isn't protecting our QB. We get stopped running up the middle and we should be running more outside. Get stopped outside and people are experts because they say we should be running more inside.
Everybody becomes an expert, because whatever did not work during the game, then they can say it is obvious we should have been doing the opposite.

Every person on this board thought we would be able to run on Auburn. You want to say you knew all along we could not? Maybe you should be a college OC....shoot, for that matter go pro, because you saw something nobody...including Chaney and Smart did not.

Why odn't you call in to Kirby and ask him? hIsn't he responsible?
Look, you game plan according to what you see as past habits from film and scouting. Not every game plan is going to work. but you work all week on this with the team. You make some adjustments, but you don't overhaul the entire game plan....if you don't like what you are seeing, then contact Kirby Smart and tell him he doesn't understand football.

Let's see....you want to trash a OC that has had two true freshman QB's, and in the second year the offense averaged something like 40 points a game? Go ahead. You are obviously much smarter than they are.

I wonder why they didn't offer you that, then? there must be a reason. Surely you put your resume in?

As usual, you said it much better with fewer words.

Only beef I have with Chaney this year is the Auburn game. Terrible play calling after we saw we could not run between the tackles. Play action, 3 step drop passes and even some wildcat formations to loosen up their defense like the 1st drive of the game. Other than the Auburn game, he has done a good job this year with a true freshman QB.

I have never looked back at something someone else did wrong and not said I could have done it better.

That wasn't directed at you, Ala. When I say something like that I am talking generalities....and thinking I am as guilty as the next guy about it. I was mainly looking at the posts people are making asking why we aren't running more of certain plays. Generally, they aren't run because the coaches don't believe thy will work against a certain defense....based on what they have seen on film, or experience.
Sorry, if I made it sound as if I were talking to you directly.

Yeah. This time last year, the media was still focused on the heart to heart that our tailbacks had with Chaney... focused on their role in this offense.
Kirby brings these boys back for an unlikely senior season.
And now we are hearing the interwebz ponder why our offense is so heavily focused on 2 tailbacks. Huh.... go figure.

I just want him to acknowledge the fact that we can't bulldoze gaps up the middle all the time. I'm so sick an tired of seeing a run up the gut for 2 yards or a loss. Run it to the edges a little if we arent passing.

No. My snarky comment was directed at those you were fussing at. It was meant to support you. Sorry if you misinterpreted.

My bad. Sometimes I'm a little slow. I didn't want you to think I was aiming it at you.
