It just depends on your perspective toward UGA basketball. Fox isn’t “ermegehrd arfurl.” We’ve seen that as UGA fans and it’s name was Ron Jirsa. He is what he is though and that’s solid but unspectacular. Fox will always have UGA being a clean, unremarkable, but respectably competitive program capable of outcoaching anyone in the league, OR, getting outcoached by anyone in the league.

If you truly believe UGA can elevate it’s basketball then he’s maddening to watch. After being a fan for a long time I’m not as sure as I used to be that such will ever happen. No longer convinced there’s enough interest, or ever will be enough, for UGA to be much better than what we’ve gotten the last 5 years.

Maybe, but basketball is a different game. I'm not sure young and hungry is enough. Smart is more than just young and hungry. He's a great coach and a relentless recruiter. This team is a one man team and that is the problem.

Yep. There are a few ways UGA takes a big step forward as a program, IMO. One is to find a young basketball savant and ride him up until he leaves for a bigger program. That’s tougher to do than people think. Another is to find an aging “name” coach, ala Jim Harrick, and hope he can give you 5 years of name recognition and better basketball. Finally, hope for/grow a quality coach out of a former player and have a loyal UGA man lead the program for a long tenure.

The second one worked once. Tough to give up on an at the very least solid coach to try for the first one. The last option is the most preferable but doesn’t just happen.

Mark Richt wins 10 games a year for 15 years and gets fired while our basketball and baseball teams have sucked for seasons and for some reason these coaches retain their jobs?

Dawg basketball is to UGA as football is to Tech. Coach wins a few, looses a lot, but keeps his job because they could do worse and are scared to take a chance on a replacement.

This team is hard to watch. I’m done with them until Fox is fired. Never thought I would say this. I’m sooooo sick of this shitty dinosaur offense.

Hiring the right coach can make a huge difference even with a non-traditional basketball program; just ask Auburn this season.

Only issue with firing Fox at this point is the 2019 class he's assembling. It could be our best class ever with multiple 5*s.

And of course the age old question: Who do you know you can hire who will be better? Auburn answered the question by hiring a controversial coach who had been successful but got fired at Tennessee. Auburn seems to have a history of recruiting competent castoffs.

The SEC as a whole has done a great job of hiring coaches the past few years. Its the main reason that this is probably the strongest the conference has been in at least 5 years.

LSU-Will Wade(2017)Already surpassed last years win total. Top 10 class next year.
Auburn-Bruce Pearl(2014)Steady climb from the bottom of SEC. Keeps getting top classes
South Carolina-Frank Martin(2012)Has a Final Four for South Carolina
Tennessee-Rick Barnes(2015)-Has the team in the top 25. Ha beaten Purdue and Kentucky this year
Florida-Mike White(2015)No drop off from Donovan. Elite Eight last year
Vanderbilt-Bryce Drew(2016)Having a bad year right now. Took Vandy to tourney last year. Has two 5* signed for next year

Thats not even counting guys like Calipari, Anderson, and Kennedy who have been at their schools or a while and are pretty good themselves.

It sucks as a Georgia fan because we could have hired Wade, Drew, or other top young guys kike Kitts(North Carolina State, Hurley(Arizona State), etc...

If we go out and fire Fox this year, who are we looking at?

Jason Capel-Duke assistant, former Oklahoma coach
Kelvin Sampson-Houston HC, has baggage, good coach
Dan Hurley-Rhode Island HC, has the last name
Fred Hoiberg-Chicago Bulls HC, will be fired soon

Of course, Hoiberg would be a dream hire, and his time in Chicago is short, but would we pay enough to get him?

Besides that, the potential available coaches look to be thin right now.

Who cares? Like I said in the basketball thread, its still 11 months out. Those guys might not even stick.

Plus, just because you get great players, it doesnt mean you will be good. Look at LSU a couple years ago. Had Ben Simmons and Antonio Blakney. Both 5*. Still didnt make the Tournament because they had a shitty coach. Or Washington. Markelle Fultz couldnt get them to the tournament. They fired Romar, and they already have 5 more wins than they did last year.

You get the coach that can win games. Players will come.

Y’all are talking about an irrelevant sport. Leave this crap to Duke and Kentucky. Let’s concentrate on the sport that matters.
