If you read Facebook comments, tweets, message boards or any public forum about last year’s Georgia football team, you probably saw people blame a lack of talent for the 8-5 season in 2016. But that’s not how Kirby Smart sees it. In fact, Smart said the exact opposite to ESPN’s Chris Low last Friday saying that "the cupboard wasn’t bare when we got here." Not only that, but Smart went out of his way to praise coach Richt. “They don’t come any finer than coach Richt,” Smart said. “I know a lot of new coaches talk all the time about how they don’t have enough good players when they get there, but I can tell you this place was in better shape than Alabama was when we got there in 2007.”

Seems to be counter the belief of this board, but I agree with CKS. We're in a better position talent wise, and pretty much were last year, than any team in the division.

The scary part: it's getting better

I mean does anyone actually think he would publicly knock his current players and Mark Richt? Not saying he’s 100% blowing smoke but come on..

That can't be right. I saw it said right here on this board. And when I argued otherwise I got laughed at and downvoted. It really, really hurt my feelings.

Dude. Almost every single major contributor this year was here last year.
The only major contributor that I can think of is Fromm and our RT, Andrew Thomas.

Thomas, Fromm, Swift, Reed (was here but sitting out), Grant.

Those are the 5 that have contributed

Deandre walker could easily have taken the Grant snaps, Chubb, Michel, Herrien and Holyfield could have easily handled the snaps Swift has taken.

So Thomas, Fromm and Reed are the three that actually played meaningful snaps.

With that being said Swift will be a beast next year and I think Grant will replace either Bellamy or Carter and there will be no drop off there next year.

When he talked chubb and Michel to come back, they became his recruits.

I mean I guess they technically could have played those snaps, but we would be worse off than we are with Swift and Grant. To say they haven't played meaningful snaps is highly absurd.

Deandre Walker has to be the most penalized player on the team.

Bama had a bad team in 2007 so that's not saying much. Bama went 6-6 and 4-4 in the SEC that season so the fact that Smart is actually making that comparison suggests that the he feels the team was pretty mediocre. Not the cupboard wasn't bare but that fact that we went 7-5 in the regular season 4-4 in the SEC suggests there were major holes to fill.

They had Julio and Hightower come in as Freshmen but they were essentially the same team in 2008. I wouldn't say they were a bad team in 2007.

We had talent last season. But none of it was senior leadership.

This year, we are reaping the benefits from last year's juniors taking their second season in a row in the leadership role. 2014 was a damn good recruiting class (2013 was the opposite).

We had some great pieces but there were some pretty clear deficiencies, too. Starting a true freshman on the OL, generally speaking, is not a spot that you want to be in.

Bama,Florida,Clemson,Ohio State and Michigan all started true freshman on their O-line last year.

These guys gotta be ready play and coaches need to be
able to get em ready.

It is paying dues for the future.
Not an ideal position for the freshman seasons. But the experience usually comes back to benefit down the road.

Different world these days.Don't believe Bama,Clemson,
OSU or UM were really playing these kids for future results. They were the most talented at their posistion and those schools expected immediate results.

We should expect the same at UGA.

Talented but had major holes in the roster, still kind of does.

Sometimes those guys just aren't high-level players.

When you have people playing out of position, true freshmen, etc., that indicates a HUGE problem. Huge. No other way to say it.
