Jim Chaney will be the downfall of this season

We all know he isn't the guy Kirby actually wanted and I predict that will come back to bite him this year.
We settled on a washed up has-been who hasn't coached a decent offense in years. The numbers speak for themselves but we're all hoping he magically turns back into the guy from Purdue because he has a full deck now?
Even if this year goes well, we all know Chaney was never intended to be the long term solution. He was going down the coaching ranks until we scooped him back up.
I'm also of the belief that this year's team has more potential than next year's team and I don't want to see this season squandered by some washed up has-been who lost his touch years ago.
If we have another failure this year then confidence in Kirby will drop with recruits and definitely set us back a year.

This is a big year with all eyes on Chaney and he knows it. I tend to agree that it's hard to imagine that he's Kirby's first pick but we all know why he did it. Time will tell. I just hope we have a balanced offense that produces 30+ points per game as it has the potential to do. His play calling worries me the most though, not necessarily development.

Awesome! I was wondering when we would get one of these type of threads! Been a little too fruity lately...

Criticize Jacolbe Eason and you'll get buried in an avalanche of excuses and rationalizations about the terribel OL, the quality of his receivers, and how he was a true freshman. And blah blah blah
But, if Eason dealt with all of this, then so did Chaney. So, why doesn't Chaney get the same pass?
My theory is that it has to do with Jacolbe's hairdo and Chaney being fat.

I've noticed this as well and would offer the following explanations:
Eason was CMR's recruit so he's beloved by the crowd that is still pissed Richt was fired. Any critique of his ability is offensive to them. Also, any Eason shortcoming is a distraction from the obvious incompetence and ultimate target of their Richtrage - McGarity, CKS and Cheney.
There were/are a lot on this Board that were convinced Eason was the second coming and would deliver us multiple championships. Criticizing Eason shakes their faith in all things football. This is similar to the Pruitt fanboys that were convinced he was the second coming of Vince Lombardi and we should've made him HC - even when he was showing up and trying to fight people on their lawns.
The psychology of the GSB and its members would make a good thesis paper for somebody.

I seem to remember, when "clicking", his offenses to be pretty good. I expect big improvements this year.

This is the time of year that I'm full of optimism and hoping for the best.

Chaney said that Eason was Bambi-ish which means the same thing as skittish. I hope that I'm dead wrong but I can't foresee Eason as a champion QB.

He has the physical tools.. he played small time football and had to get used to lots of bigger and faster dudes playing more complicated defenses. He wasn't given the luxury of 2 years learning the ropes... I'll give him some slack.

Plus there's the minor fact that he was a true freshman without a lot of good, tall targets. The guy threw some passes that a lot of seniors couldn't throw. He should be fine......better than fine. He's should be one of UGA's best ever, if he has some good targets with good hands. Remember how many passes were dropped last year. A Julio Jones can make a superstar out of a QB.

Chaney has a long history.

How do you know this?

Go to Dawg Nation and read the context. Chaney said that last year the offensive line was porous and that Eason was Bambi-ish. I interpret that as skittish. We all saw Eason run from the pocket many times when he did not need to do so.

I'll give you an example. During the Florida game, Chaney called a fly sweep to Davis. It worked nicely for about a 6 yard gain. The very next play, for some reason Chaney calls the exact same play out of a different formation and Florida devoured it for a 5 yard loss.
His run, run, pass playcalling was way too predictable for my liking. There would be times when everyone in the stadium was expecting a run up the gut out of the I behind an offensive line that couldn't block. Sure enough, he'd call a predictable run up the middle for a 1 yard gain and put the offense in a tough spot.

Chaney had a history of mixing up run and pass on early downs until last year. Passing on early downs makes a QB's job much easier--important for a true freshman. Randy McMichael blamed the poor play calling on the fact that we had a rookie head coach with a defensive background. Maybe Kirby had too much influence. Kirby did call some dumb plays in the red zone. Game performance of the coaches must improve.

Hopefully we can get four of five more of these complain about Chaney threads before the season starts.
