Is 2019 the make or break year?

I have a gut feeling that this is the defining year for Kirby and Co. to either break through and bring home the natty, continue to build off momentum and string together stellar recruiting classes and compete for the next decade or we lose to Bama once again and our program loses a lot of its luster thereby making the kids stop buying in and setting up for a dreadful 2020 and so on.

Two paths for us to take, one leads to glory and continued success and the other leads us back to a Richt-esque stature.

Hopefully I’m wrong but what do you guys think?

I don't think if we fail to win a national title this year anything is "broken". I don't think our program will lose it's luster. I don't think 2020 and onward will be "dreadful" as you say. I don't think not winning a title takes us back to the richt era.

What I fear is a scenario where losing to Bama again will set off a domino effect of bad press and negative momentum. In today’s world, that can be detrimental, especially if UF has another good year and recruits top 5 next year.

I think 2019 is our best chance to win or at least get back to the championship game. Every position on the roster is filled with elite and experienced personnel. I think teams losing personnel like Bama(Offense,Defense, staff), Clemson(Defense) and Ohio St(Oline) won't be as good as they were in 2018.

Maybe in terms of our roster, but damn our schedule is brutal.

Id like to see us fricking show up to every game...Kirby is a great coach but frick me if we haven't had a head scratcher every year.

Auburn a few years back, LSU/Texas last year, ole miss his first year even though I excuse that on a bit..

Championship teams dont lay eggs...they just dont.

Bama gave up 43 points to Ole Miss and lost that game in a Championship year...

Auburn beat them by 2 touchdowns 2 years ago in a championship year...

I don’t enjoy bringing this up, but we were a 2nd and 26 away from the championship in 2017-18. You can win a championship if you lose by a ton during the season, it’s just not incredibly common.

I’m with you that I’d like to see fewer games where we lay an egg, but hopefully the more talent we’re beginning to bring in will help us with that.

We could even make the playoffs this year with 2 losses. As long as we win the SECe and SECCG, they really would have a hard time leaving out the SEC champion.

I think most of us could expect another SEC title game this year. I'd like to think 3rd time is the charm and we get the W. It really comes down to match ups in the playoffs.

So, I think we should make the playoffs this season, but it's impossible to say who will win at that point....too many factors involved

Make or break for what?

We're here. Quit trying to look into the future and enjoy the success we are having with Kirby.

We just have to get over one small road bump to win it all, but otherwise we are consistently in the conversation at this point.

2017 could have easily been a make or break year. It wasn't.

Here's Nick Saban's first several years, and he didn't have the entire state of Georgia for recruiting. Identify his make or break:

Year Team Overall Conference Standing Bowl/playoffs Coaches# AP°
Toledo Rockets (Mid-American Conference) (1990)
1990 Toledo 9–2 7–1 T–1st
Toledo: 9–2 7–1
Michigan State Spartans (Big Ten Conference) (1995–1999)
1995 Michigan State 6–5–1 4–3–1 5th L Independence
1996 Michigan State 6–6 5–3 5th L Sun
1997 Michigan State 7–5 4–4 6th L Aloha
1998 Michigan State 6–6 4–4 6th
1999 Michigan State 9–2[n 2] 6–2 T–2nd Florida Citrus
Michigan State: 34–24–1 23–16–1
LSU Tigers (Southeastern Conference) (2000–2004)
2000 LSU 8–4 5–3 3rd (Western) W Peach 22
2001 LSU 10–3 5–3 1st (Western) W Sugar† 8 7
2002 LSU 8–5 5–3 T–2nd (Western)[n 3] L Cotton
2003 LSU 13–1 7–1 1st (Western) W Sugar†

With every loss to Alabama, that road bump gets closer to being a mountain. I think Kirby is great and will be for a long time, but I really, really hope Alabama doesn't become a mental roadblock like Florida was for so many years. It was so bad in Jax for awhile that we would often be down 14-0 before the game started because of the mental block.

I believe we end up beating Bama this go round.

The talent gap is now gone and we are filled with 5 stars literally everywhere.

Also, Kirby will continue to get better with in game management.

I don't worry about mental roadblocks. Dabo hadn't won a championship until he did. Peyton Manning hadn't won a championship until he did. The mental roadblocks are just a media talking point. I don't believe in them.

2019 is our best team in the trenches. And may be the best opportunity in the trenches (losing a couple of offensive tackles is likely) for some time.
The team needs an urgency. It needs to feel desperate. Whether it is or isnt, the players can't leave any excuses on the table (coaches either).

I don't think our alabama issue is mental at all, unless you want to count on the part of chaney's playcalling and playign not to lose.

Those years under Richt where we woudl inexplicably lose to UF when we shouldn't were definitely mental, in the sense that we were FAR more talented and had no business losing to them. We would have the better roster, end up with a better season, better record, better ranking, but somehow still lose in Jax. That's not the case with bama. They have been the most talented team in america for about 10 years in a row now and have the best college coach in the history of football. You can say we should have capitalized on opportunities better, but I absolutely don't think that we have played scared or been intimidated by them the last 2 meetings.

You do realize that Alabama only won one NC since Saban came with an undefeated record. That was in 2009.

I'm not defending sandwich here, but I think his point was how badly we were blown out in these losses, not simply that we lost the game.
